your detachable trunk bag that is... i have the buell detachable saddlebags for lightnings, i was thinking about the trunk bag to haul my laptop and lunch to work. the computer is 12 3/4" wide x 9" deep x 1" tall(small) but will it fit? who knows? The pics online don't really show enough. does it split like a briefcase, or is the top zipper in the pics the way into the main compartment? if so how big is the opening? any better pics or info would be great. I know there are no dimensions either, cause it's small. "How small is it?.." it's so small.... |

It wont fit, dude. At all. Don't even bother with dimensions. I have it, and when I recieved it I realized that it was WAY smaller than I thought it was going to be. Sorry. I bought a backpack that's basically made by the swiss army knife guys and it has a laptop holder in it and is extremely comfortable while ridin with it. Good Luck Mark |

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I have the cortech sport tail bag. It fits my laptop which is a couple inches larger than yours (I have the wide-screen laptop). The bag zips out on the sides to extend wider. It also fits (at the same time) a pair of shoes and the rain liner for my jacket and still has a bit of extra space. It's tight, but it works. It looks reasonably good on the bike and comes on/off pretty easily. For peace of mind, I added a strap that goes under the seat with the quick-release buckles coming out on either side of the seat, which I attach to the straps intended to connect to the matching saddlebags (which I don't have). This mod gives me 100% confidence it isn't going to slide to one side or come off in case the bungie attachments break or come off or something. If you have saddlebags you won't have the issue though. http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?produc tid=148&cat=31 Comes with rainproof cover and it's very reasonably priced. |

Your laptop will easily fit in the Buell trunk bag. Even with the expansion zippers closed, it will fit in length wise no problem. I'm looking at it right now in my office and you could easily stack 5 laptops on top of each other with the expansion open in the trunk bag. I just finished a 2500 mile, 6 day trip using my Buell trunk, saddle and tank bags and had plenty of space. I'm not one for overloading the bike mind you. Some of the pics I've seen posted bordered on crazy IMHO. All of my belongings stayed dry as a bone too through some serious and lengthy rain storms. |

My bag is HUGE. I have to sit it up on top of my breather box when I ride. Sometimes it's hard to even see over it.
Sorry I couldn't resist! |

A laptop will not fit the Buell trunk bag. Try a messenger style sling bag, mine works great. |

Irideabuell is right, it will fit. I packed a week's worth of gear in my saddlebags (rain gear, shoes and misc computer crap), trunk bag (shirts, socks underwear - rolled & toiletries) and a backpack (jeans & laptop). A laptop & lunch should fit. You can use the saddle bags for rain gear and small accessories. Here are the dimensions: Not extended - The back: (closest to the rider) 13" wide X 7" tall Front: 11" wide X 5" tall Depth: 12" Extended: Back: (closest to the rider) 17" wide X 7" tall Front: 15" wide X 5" tall Depth: 12" You may add .25" - .5" on the widths. Edit: I think the problem is getting it inside as the opening is only: 10" X 7" X 10" A Dell D600 or similar type should fit, medium & large laptops will not. Hey guys be careful using the buell sling bag for important cargo or anything over 10 to 15 pounds, mine broke. The main sling strap stitching, I think I can fix it. Good think I only use it for my gun stuff and ammo when I go to the range, not on the bike! |

The TRUNK will fit a laptop (fit my HP zv5000 with 15.5 screen). The TAIL on the other hand... is good for keys, wet-wipes, paperwork, toolkit, and a bottle of water. |

Ya know the best thing I have found is a small backpack from Wal Mart. Its sold with the luggage, its black has two compartments and is the same shape and size as the tail section on my firebolt. I cross the straps under the tail and its stays great, been using it for over a year now. I can take it off and wear it like a backpack off the bike. I'll try to post pictures if anyone wants to see it. It was $9.97 I couldn't beat the price with anything. |

I'm with Perry on the Cortech tail bag. However, I was worried that all my gear wouldn't fit into the Sport version, so I opted for the Tribag. http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?produc tid=147&cat=31 Same features, just a little taller. I usually stash my laptop, a full change of clothes, a pair of shoes, and a few toiletries, and still have one of the side compartments available. Stays put really well. ~SM |

Thanks all, I was talking about the trunk, the flat one that attached to the saddlebags. Certainly, the tail bags are way way too small for anything but a pair of sunglasses and a juicebox. I do have the buell slingbag, and a backpack, but i am sold on saddlebags from way back. i keep a toolset, and anything i else i want, can just drop in, and i never feel it when i'm riding. (couple bottles of water, map, snacks, bike magazine, you know the basics) sure, it makes the bike look like a sport-touring rig a little, but i really like not having to carry anything on my person when i ride. my laptop is a mackbook, 13 in. (flat black is SO cool, i may have to have it pinstriped) |

The Cortech Sport and Tri bags have matching saddle bags available, if that's what you're interested in. http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?produc tid=146&cat=31 " the tail bags are way way too small for anything but a pair of sunglasses and a juicebox. You did read what all I carry, didn't you? When I take the bike to my fencing class, I can stuff a set of gloves, a leather gorget, a padded jacket, and a whole fencing helmet in the Tribag. Takes a bit of doing, but definitely holds more than a juicebox. Not sure what this "trunk" bag is, but according to Tour Master, what I've got is a "tail bag", and it holds plenty. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on November 01, 2006) |

swordsman, of course i read your post. highlight of my day, but.. i was definitely talking buell branded stuff there. Rasmonis, Yeah, I thought so, no dealer has one in stock around here, (denver) so i may have to buy on faith (or a 10% restocking fee). thank you again for the dimensions. It will be nice to "grab and go". it's so small a mouse could use it as a shower cap. |

I thought it was leather for some reason. I was a little disappointed but hey, it works for me. The pics on the site give that impression. |

Swordsman, do you have the Tribags Saddlebags as well? Maybe a pic of all three mounted? I am trying to decide btw the Sport and Tri--Tailbag plus saddlebags. I have a Cityx and I am wondering if the Tri bags will overwhelm the rear. |

Fresno, no I don't have the saddle bags. The only reason I got a bag at all was because wearing a backpack with all my protective gear felt too cumbersome. The thought of buying them has crossed my mind, just so I'd already have a matching set should I ever need them. The Sport bag would definitely look better, but I needed some decent capacity without turning my bike into a mule. I don't think the Tribag itself would be too much on your bike. It's just my personal opinion, but I think all saddlebags look like overkill on the Lightnings and Firebolts. If you're going that route, though, the Sport bag would definitely look the best, with only a slight reduction in capacity. And since you have a CityX, you can get them to actually match your bike (blue or black)! ~SM |

I would look into getting an Axio hardshell backpack. The make them to hold a laptop and the have a hard fiberglass shell that is very durable. I have been looking into them for awhile, just can't decide which one I want. |

Sword, thanks for the input. I am already accepting the fact that either the Tri-Bags or Sports will not be very "cool" looking--function over form in this case. And yes, I think the "Sport" line is the better fit for the size of the Lightnings, but if I can't fit all my junk for a road trip, then the Sports are a waste. Hmmm. *maybe* the Cycle gear here has both so I can check it out on the bike. but I doubt it! Anyone else have experience with the Cortech bags? |

I still like my Ventura system the best for my carrying needs. It takes me only five minutes to switch between the sport rack (for the small 10 liter sport pack) & the tall rack (for the 35 & 45 liter bags). I usually just use the small sport pack. Sometimes the 35 liter pack & once the 35 liter bag with the 45 liter bag attached to it. Talk about enormous carrying capacity. I couldn't fit the kitchen sink into it but the bathroom sink fit just fine. I had at one time thought about the saddle bags/trunk bag combo but I don't like that you can't carry a passenger with that set up. Not that I ever carry passengers (I can only think of two times in the last 1.5 years)but I like to leave my options open. |

Luckydevil See http://www.revpack.com/motorcycle/main.html soft luggage and if you decide to select a color other than Black, get a color swatch first. They have some intresting products. I have the Jr. Tour Pack and the Saddle Bags. You could get the Excursion Pack and transport a mini mainframe and start a catering service instead of laptop and lunch. |

I have the Tourmaster sport tail bag and sadlebags for my Lightning. They hook together for mounting and are expandable. I really like them, and in conjunction with a tank bag I have gone camping for a few days without any issue. They look great, hold plenty, and mount securely. It took a while to get everything lined up and adjusted just right but after that I did a 780 mile day without issue fully loaded and had it up to 130 and did not loose anything. You do need to put some duct tape under attachment points to keep from wearing on the paint. If you buy them you will not be disappointed. Mine are red and match my bike they also come in blue and black. By the way I use the tail bag with the built in bungees most days for my shoes and lunch for work and it is great. I lost one of my shoes one day and had to wear my Sidi's all day that day, thats when I bought the sport tail bag and no more worries. |

I checked out the Cortech Tri Bag system and it seems just too big for the Lightning. Looks like it is going to the the Sports..Thats okay, I like the look of the sports better. Hope they are big enough. |

I looked pretty seriously at the Ventura system too. Now I just have a large yellow waterproof duffle that goes on the pillion area. It holds my tent, cooking gear, sleeping pad and sleeping bag. I use web loops and long straps and it tightens up very secure, clothes go in the tank bag, with my tools etc in zip-locs and I carry a Aerostitch courier bag for overflow items. It's a little hard to see the speedo with the extension on the tank bag up all the way. I really like it compacted down more. RKA stuff is very durable and innovative zipper design allows you to just zip the section closed to compress it. Better than most others that use snaps or whatever. Complete sport-tourer in a XB9S, good for short weekend or over the road weeks with my Aerostitch suit and rain cover for the tank bag, SOLO only. |
