I broke the upper tail section mount on my XB9R. The threaded loops in the frame ripped off. Is this repairable? Should I make a claim on my insurance and pay my $500 deductible? Or try and fix it my self, my friend thinks he can weld on new posts and I can re thread them for new bolts.

Any ideas guys? Right now any thing would help. Thanks –Chris

If you have the piece it is really simple just get it Tig welded with the proper filler, IF not then build it up with the TIG and drill it out and re thread...
Then re thread or even gear up a grade 8 bolt and nylon lock nut with washer on back side, Had the same thing done no worries...

If you put a Stainless bolt or Stainless rod of some sort through the hole the correct size and get it Tig welded afterwards you can screw out the bolt or remove the rod as the Tig will not hold good to the stainless...Requires a good welder though...
Hope this helps some what...

IF ya lay a firebolt down on its side in a crash of course and it hits the right way this will happen , I have seen this before...
Wd. expect it could happen as well if ya do the almighty back flip and over wheelie...

Tried a back flip, I didn’t have the balls to follow though so I bailed. The bike landed on the top of the front fairing.

Amazingly the only damage was the magnesium gauge frame and the seat frame mounts. The plastics barely got scuffed in two dime sized spots and the windshield shattered. I even rode it home.

I couldn’t find the parts of the frame that broke off. Woot woot for Buell toughness and durability!!

PS If I’d have stuck with it I would have landed it. But I don’t think I’ll try again.

If it were me, I'd take it back to the dealership, that should be covered under warranty.

Dude, you NEED to continue with that back flip program, you gotta get that on tape. I'd love to see it!
Back flip on a Buell....awesome, great promo for the brand. Has anyone seen it done on a Beemer? I doubt it.
It would make those guys on the moto-X-ers look like Cub Scouts.

A welder/fabricator can make it right.

I'd steer clear of an insurance claim.

I'm betting the welding will be maybe $100-$150 and the drilling/tapping you can do yourself - or maybe add $50. $200 max (guessing)

Call around where you live for certified welders/fabricators in aluminum.

Be sure to tell the insurance company HOW you broke the tail. I am sure they will be very HAPPY to process your claim, right to the DENIED file.

We got the Idea from this video on Youtube.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx1EeyUN69Q

He got close on a front flip in the video so I figured a back flip would be easy.

I've been doing it for years on my BMX even double backwards and forwards. So no video it was rather impromptu, but I got some witnesses.

As far as doing it again... I don’t think so I'll let someone with a bigger budget and a smaller will to survive do it.

DUH?

Waitaminute... you were not joking when you said you were trying to do a back flip on a buell?? You actually thought it would work??
Like flip backwards and land on the tires???

Please tell me that I am understanding this incorrectly.

I am speechless... I am without words.

I ain't no welding expert, but I am guessing he was just as serious about trying to do a flip as he was about saying he stick welded a cast aluminum part for an effective repair.

Like I said, I am no welding expert, but I am guessing stick welding cast alumimum would be like using a shotgun to peel a grape.

I'm with No_Rice on this one folks. CD didn't come on here crying the blues about how bad he had it -- he wadded his bike and was looking for a fix.

I wouldn't advocate the insurance route nor would I advocate trying this at home (and I sure won't let this cat ride any of my bikes!)

If you've never been stupid on your bike then I guess you can keep pounding on him, but if you have done something stupid on a motorcycle (remember!!!!!! I've ridden with many of you so don't freaking lie) leave the guy alone. I'll also admit that trying to flip the Buell is beyond the normal hooligan stuff that I'm familiar with : )

CD, Get Kevin Drum to hook you up and then quit trying to flip it.

Reepicheep,
You wd. be surprise what a good welder can do, and some will never weld with a Tig, and some do a MUCH better job with a stick than a Tig., are you saying you can`t weld cast alum. with a Stick, I guess you are right you are no welder...

I thought that in order to weld almuminum, you needed either some sort of gas torch setup (and with that it is darn difficult to tell the difference between "molten" and "gone") or a Tig welder with some special current settings (rectified square wave? I forget).

I've never seen aluminum welding rod, nor complicated settings on a stick welder.

Further, i thought you could braze cast parts, but if trying to weld you would have a hard time not creating localized stress from the localize heat of a stick welder... meaning gas was a better choice as you can bring large areas up to temp.

But I am just a garage gas welder, I can't afford any other equipment and don't know that much about it.

Well sounds like you know more about it than me, But I have seen welders that have been welding for the past 25 years that could weld floors in your car with a stick which was something to see, this area he has to weld is not a huge area so perhaps that makes it easier, but what do I know LoL...
