I've going to replace the ECM with the Race ECM, and was wondering if it's possible to reset the TPS myself, or will it have to go to the dealer? Looking through the archives, it appears I'll have to take it to the dealer, but just wanted to be sure, since my dealer is 2 hours away. I'm in Cedar Rapids, IA. Thanks for any info. |

Thanks for the reply. How much does the SW cost, and does it run on a windows platform? |

Thanks 99buellX1, I'll call Silver Eagle and see what they charge. Does putting the Race ECM on the bike void the warannty? |

The dealer around here said it didn't void the warranty if they installed the whole race kit. |

Now I have a question, what are the symptoms if your bike needs to have the TPS reset? In time mine has become very touchy right off idle, it wants to blast off-although as much fun as that may be it isn't in traffic. This sound like a TPS issue? I ordered the gadget; I just wonder is this will cure the problem. "I ain't taken my Mo'sikle to no dealer" Bumblebee |

A TPS that is slightly off cal will generally not idle smoothly. You need to crank the idle plate higher than what it should be at to get a idle that won't die, and it will be a tad erratic. When you crack it, it is prone to coughing/backfiring. Once above 20% throttle, it will usually be reasonably well behaved. If it is more than just a little off, the bike won't start or run at low throttle angles at all, and it will backfire most heinously when trying to get it going. |

Oh you aint kiddin' with that last one Al ... I work at a jail now (I do the computers and industrial controls) and the other day I was cranking her over... For some reason she decided to not fire right up so I stopped and cranked her again for a second... BIG BADABOOM!!!!! There were three patrol officers just inside the secure area about 40' from my bike... Two ducked behind a patrol car and one froze . I need a TPS reset . |

It came! It Came and I did it! My own Do It Yourself TPS reset. That was pretty easy. I was able to complete a TPS reset with the Technoresearch VDSTS that American Sport Bike sells. Its 200 bucks. You get a cable to interconnect your bike to your serial equipped computer that runs windows. For the $200 you get: The software, the cable, a neat plastic box to keep it in and one page of instructions. Pretty thin. The good news is a full manual can be downloaded from Technoresearch by anyone. http://www.technoresearch.com There is a good set of instructions on how to do a TPS in the zipped file, which is very helpful. You can also download the software, however there is a hardware key integrated into the cable. The software worked great. I loaded it up on my crappy old 200 MHz computer with Windows 2000, this was enough machine for the software to run on. At least it did for me. To do a TPS reset the throttle plate must be completely closed. Not at idle, but closed, you must back off the idle adjustment screw to do this. The VDSTS can provide you with a voltage reading that will confirm that the throttle plate is completely closed and that the TPS pot is working properly. You snap the throttle closed a few times and note the reading, also you can feel a slight amount of resistance when you open the throttle, this is, I am told, is the throttle plate completely closing the throttle body. At this point you press the button in the software and it “zeros” out the TPS as far as the FI computer is concerned. You can never change the reading from the TPS pot, but the operation resets a data value that allows the FI computer to get an accurate reference of where the throttle setting is. This will cause a TPS setting of “0” now turn the idle screw up until a reading of 5.5 is achieved. Start the motorcycle and warm it up then set the idle speed to 1050 (or so) RPM. Job complete. More info: Most of you know this, but our Buells use a throttle plate just like a carburetor is used to control engine speed. The amount of fuel that’s injected into the engine depends on a number of factors, but the most important is for the FI computer to know just how far open the throttle is, this is what the TPS does. If the TPS is telling the FI computer that the throttle is closed, but it’s open just a bit as we are trying to ease away from a stop sign the engine will run too lean and performance problems will result, likewise the other way too rich. The VDSTS software gets a great deal of information from the FI computer and can display it for you, also this software allows you to see what’s going on. This screen screen (poor quality, sorry) showing data from my bike, you can see the TPS position in relation to the tachometer as well as spark advance and the battery voltage. This is the same data, just in Dial format. I did not take a picture of the screen that lets you do the TPS reset, there is nothing really to look at, it's just a button that you press. Once you do it comes up with a warning that it will effect engine operation and to read the manual. If you do press it and don’t have the throttle closed all the way – you will have a problem fast. Any how, I am mid peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, if you want your bike messed up for free just let me know, heck we might get lucky and actually get it properly reset. |

It can do a fair amount. http://www.technoresearch.com/ Download the manual to see all. Beware however the software will show what the ECM makes available to it so not all functions in the manual will work on your Buell. |
