Hi I have just tried to fit the race kit muffler to my 2003 XB9R and when all bolted up the RH muffler outlet all but touches the belt idler pulley. Is this normal? What am I doing wrong. I have searched the archives but cant find any mention of this regards terry | ||

The MY02/MY03 Pro Series muffler (at least without a little modification) doesn't fit on the MY04/05/06/07 XB due the different belt... Maybe your Firebolt is a MY04 purchased at the end of 2003? | ||

they do sit very tight. mine's been that way for a long time , no problem as long as there isn't any contact. | ||

Do you have the upgraded belt? If so you need a 12 muffler, the 04 belt and pulley are just a little lower and hit the 03 9 muffler outlet. The 03 9 muffler is shorter than the 12. I have a 04 12R with a 03 9 muffler and had to modify the outlet to fit. | ||

It's not an XB9 vs XB12 muffler issue, it's an 03 vs 04 or later XB race muffler. Of course, all 03 race mufflers WERE XB9 race mufflers since there were no XB12s. You must have the 04 or later belt drive on the bike for it to be hitting. Al | ||

My '06 has the early race kit muffler. The parts people sent me the only one they had left and it turned out to be wrong, so instead of messing with sending it back, I installed it. Work fine. There was some pulley contact going down the road, and it put like a 1/32-inch little gouge in the can and doesn't hit anymore. No problems since. --Sean | ||

Oh that explains the problem then I have a kit for the 03 but I have the 04 belt, idler and sprockets fitted. Rats never thought of that. I think putting a spacer between the muffler and the rear 1/2 moon mount will solve the problem. Thanks guys Terry | ||

Hi I fitted a 2mm spacer under the mount but the pulley still hit. A couple of well placed taps with a ball pien hammer soon made clearance however. With the paint touched up and the pulley on it cant be seen anyway. Problem is I must be getting too old as I think the race muffler is a bit too loud for me. Terry | ||

The spacer is not a good idea, I think... Loosen the muffler, put a 1/8 inch piece of "something" between the muffler and the pulley, retighten. | ||

Loosen the muffler, put a 1/8 inch piece of "something" between the muffler and the pulley, retighten. DO NOT use the muffler straps in such a manner! They are designed for holding and no other un-implied force. The bands are only spotwelded in 3 or 4 places and are made of stainless steel. Using the straps like that could cause the straps to snap. | ||

Stuff em,. Just get some heat shield tape and fold it over and slap it up top mate. It will pull the muffler down enough to clear th pulley. Happens to most Buells... Doc | ||

I fitted an 03 muffler to my 06 XB12R. I had the same problem - very frustrating - I kept thinking it was something I was doing wrong. When I found out what the problem was (thanks to this forum) I had the outlets cut off and rewelded at more of a downturned angle. I had to respray the muffler but that was okay as I bought it second-hand anyway. |
