Before purchasing my 2007 12Ss I obtained insurance quotes from numerous companies online and on the phone. I decided to go with Progressive who gave me a quote of $509.00US.

This quote included liability, comp and collision with maximum ($1000.00) deductions.
I complete transaction on phone so I can confirm all information exchanged between Progressive and myself is accurate.Quote is confirmed and policy is drawn and paid in full by credit card. This took place on 10-07-06.

Jump to today where I receive a email informing me that the policy is online for review....click the link....hmmm policy xxxxx....2007 Buell xb1 Lightning...vin# xxxxxxx... Balance due....WHA , HUH...$351.00...scrolllllllll to bottom.... Total for ploicy $860.00 !!!!. Not allowed to yell WTF in office so I leave desk, walk down to street....WTF!!!!, WTF!!!!, ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR F........CAlm down.

I am now on the phone with Customer Support who reviews policy, reviews quote, puts me on hold for 5 and comes back with........

WELLLLL..You see....uh.. We had mistakenly listed the motorcycle under the wrong class on the Website and the Underwriter caught it before approving policy!! (Note I am calm ,clear and patient during this phone call because I want resolution not confrontation and I know I am dealing with a policy follower not policy maker). I then ask if I can speak to someone who can effect policy as I have found the explanation given unacceptable.I am put on the line with a manager to whom I make the following points.

1. I received quote for Motorcycle via Email for $509.00

2. I am given confirmation that all Information I supplied for quote corresponds to VIN# and quote stands as is.

3.I purchased policy on phone, paid in full and received confirmation#.

4.I make the point that said motorcycle is not new to market and that Progressive is not new to insuring them and 3 1/2 years is ample enough time to catch a classification glitch in system unless of course I am only Buell XB owner in U.S to ever be insured by Progressive.

5. I should have received some kind of notice that my policy would have a premium increase of 70% and not by a bill for $351.00 in the mail(which I would have if I was not "Web Literate" heh heh.. ).

I give contact numbers and am told that I will receive return call shortly. I am a bit surprised and satisfied to receive that call 10 minutes later. I am told that all of my points were indeed correct and that I should NOT be held responsible for any oversights on Progressive's end and as such my original quote would be honored for original (1 year) term. I found resolution satisfactory and thanked manger for his attention in the matter and was thanked for my patience which brought this matter to It's conclusion.

I started to type this post before call back from Insurer so it was definitely going in a different direction than it eventually took. And though everything worked out in end I continued post because I thought Info could be useful to some of you great people out there. Staying calm on the phone and providing full and detailed information on transaction ( and being right in the first place) kept a really aggravating situation from becoming a drawn out trip down Time and Money road.

Stay healthy
Stay smart
Stay safe,

Randy

I got the same treatment from State Farm. Only this time the error was human. My local person input the CCs as 123 instead of 1203. It only doubled the annual price. I checked with Progressive and State Farm is still less.

Although $85/mo seems high.

That was a fine piece of communicating green. Your points are insightful and well stated. An educated man I gather. Good for you on prevailing with your sharp wit, razor tongue, and cool head. Hmmm...sounds like the skillset of a good rider too.

Progressive quoted me a ridiculously expensive price so I didn't even write their quote down. However initially they did low ball me by classifying the bike as a standard. When I called back to purchase the policy they jacked it up about 70% like they tried to do to you. Too bad I didn't whip out the Visa checkcard when they originally quoted me. Based on our coincidentally similar situations, sounds like the possibility of a little scam action going on. Guess they don't figure us motorhead sportbike junkies have enough snap to communicate nationwide huh.

I'm on my second year with DairyLand. First year was $980. This year is $720 for an 05 XB12Scg in south Texas. That includes riders safety course discount, alarm discount, winter discount, and homeowners discount.

I recently had a shunt (not my fault) & had my XB insured with Progressive (I already had my Road King insured with them). While they were really polite and good to deal with from my end, the guy at the shop where the bike was said they are really difficult to deal with on estimates & such. We finally got the bike totaled and they gave me full retail (07, 1 weeks old). I asked the collision guy at the dealer who he would insure his stuff with - he said Geico without a doubt. When I got the replacement XB, I checked and Geico was about 30% less than Progressive.

I have had progressive for a a few years now for various buells. I now pay (with no price hikes like you had) $400 year.

Just liability.
Under 25
speeding tix and totaled bike on record.

I was going to buy a new CityX last year, but Harley ins quoted my $6386.32 (not a typo over 6K a year) for the first year with a $250 deductible. Lets just say I did not buy the new bike.

I have State Farm and I pay $48/month for the CityX, $500 deductible, excellent agent, clean record. They also cover all of your add-ons without adding cost to the policy, as long as you have reciepts.

Progressive did the same thing with me when I bought my H-D a few years back. Except I went there in person and was given a certain qoute. I then get a letter in the mail advising me they made a mistake and my insurance would actually be $100 more a year than qouted....

I dropped them like a hot potato in July... Geico gave me a lot better qoute. Been with them ever since.

Insurance rates are a crapshoot for most of us. Even the math geniuses on the TV show NUMB3RS would have trouble cracking the code!

Seriously, there are so many variables that go in to it. age, zipcode, msf, record, displacement, marital status, mood of insurance agent, whatever.

What I have learned is to shop around every time renewal time is near. Last two years Geico has been the best for me here in western WA.

Good luck.

My premium for full coverage and $50 collision and comprehensive is around 520 a year through state farm, and this state is more expensive than most to insure or so I have found out.

Keep in mind that most insurance companies now run a credit check as part of their rating system. Since I'm an insurance agent at a competitor of Progressive I'm not surprised by what happened at all. I basically hear the same thing a few times a day about various companies: "I got a quote for $XXX, bought the policy, then my rate jumped to $XXX!" Obviously I only hear the negative about competitors because most people only shop around when they aren't satisfied with what they currently have.

Edit: I have State Farm and pay $30/mo for "full coverage" on my 03 9r.

The part that worries me is this is not new for Progressive.

When I inquired they didn't even have the xb8sx listed... They kept asking me if I was sure of the model.

Another thing that worries me, many insurance companies have stopped providing their own moto coverage. Instead they sell a private label version of Progressive (USAA I am looking in your direction)
We are getting squeezed by them one way or another.

They did the ol' bait and switch on me about 6 years ago on my car policy.(Great first year rate and then a huge jump the following.) I swore up and down that I would NEVER be back and told anyone considering them the same thing. However I was paying $700 yr with dairyland and am now, ahem, back with progressive. They offered $250 yr with the same coverages as before. 26, Male, Single, Clean driving record. I'm definitely watching my ass this time.

While I'm not an XB owner, I insure 3 Buells with Progressive Drive. Off the top of my head, I don't remember the exact amount for the year. I think I pay about $45/month for all 3 bikes with a $500 deductable. The crazy thing is my wife's Blast costs the same as my S3T & S1W combined.

I have a hard time understanding why everyone is paying huge insurance premiums to these companies. I've been riding for thirty years and have only paid liability, because it is mandatory in New York, otherwise I wouldn't even pay that. If I had paid for collision and comprehension all those years I'd be out thousands of dollars and wouldn't have had the opportunity to collect anything. If for some reason you have to make a claim they will jack up your insurance the next year. I realize it's a chance I take especially with my new Lightning but unless I total it, I'd rather spend the money fixing it (myself). Liability costs less than $150 where I live and I carry vintage comprehension on three bikes that are more than fifteen years old for stated value. It's cheap but the mileage has to be kept below 1500. Insurance companies are the pits.

Dairyland, statefarm, progressive...I check them all every year before I renew my policy.

Frankfast everyone should carry liability unless they are wealthy. If you hurt someone else who is going to pay for their doctor bills, which can be very very expensive.

You're right. Which is why it's mandatory. The problem is that people want to be protected against everything these days. Only the lawyers and insurance companies benefit. It costs too much. I'll take my chances. So far so good.

Progressive pulled the LOW LOW introductory rate crap with me too, then doubled the rate at renewal time. I dont have much use for PROGRESSIVE insurance anymore.

Funny, I just read this thread for the first time, didn't read all of the posts but a friend of mine told me today the same thing the first poster said here. He got a bill in the mail with NO EXPLANATION a bill that was $100 more than usual. I am thinking they do this in hopes that people won't say anything and just pay the total. I too went with Geico, but went from Dairyland to Geico instead and saved about $400 for the year.

Has anybody tried to add the bike to their car policy as an additional car. I use Farm Bureau of Tennessee and by doing this it cut the insurance cost in half. I am 23 and for full coverage I pay 320 a year and have 100 deductibles.

Keep in mind that people have lots of accidents everyday. And somebody has to pay for them. So we all end up footing the bill. Drive carefully. Once you pay the policy premium you have a legally binding contract. The insurance companies are playing the odds that most people will just freak-out and pay the increase. Butch

I paid $600/year for Dairyland, full coverage. This was hundreds less than any other company, and I called them all! When I low-sided last year it was a $6000 repair, and I was sure glad to have the full coverage!

I expected the rate to go WAY up after that, but in fact they renewed me at the same exact rate. Can't complain about that!
