Reading the service manual for a clutch adjustment, it uses the terminology, "turn conterclockwise until adjustment screw lightly bottoms" Can someone define bottoms for me? Please? (Message edited by vaneo1 on October 19, 2006) |

"lightly bottoms" = When the piece (adjusting nut?) that is slowly being drawn into the recess in the clutch makes contact with the bottom of the recess. I like Doc's "two finger" description, that is the way I did it too. What complicates things is that continuing to turn the screw has little feel. It slowly takes out some slack and then starts compressing the springs in the clutch pack (the same as if the clutch lever is pulled). So there is no real stopping point to be felt there. The light contact and 1/4 or 1/8th turn the opposite direction is what takes the pulling load off of the bearing the adjusting screw is mounted and turning in. That bearing is always turning, it is only loaded when you pull the clutch lever if it is adjusted right. If it is always loaded, it will eventually fail. You can't get the adjustment at the screw right if you do not back the cable length adjuster fully off first (making the lever floppy at the bar) before adjusting the screw. Jack |
