Does mr buell know because this bike cost me $9000.00 and estimate to fix as there is a another down here in NZ done the same thing cost $4500.00 to fix $1900.00 in parts 40 hrs labour est 2200.00 cheers |

You do not have to split the cases to remove the tranny. Remove primary cover, clutch basket/clutch, primary chain. Tranny is behind access door behind the clutch basket. It sounds like damage to the shifter plate mechanism. Should be an easy, inexpensive fix. |

mike on the XB models there is no trap door in the tranny.you have to pull the motor and split the cases, to get to the shift drum. Dave sounds similar to what happened to mine. i had to replace my shift drum and shift forks. although i had use of 1,2,and 3rd gear. brian |

Ooooppps! My bad! I was only thinking of the Sportster engine in general. Old school is alive and well! I wasn't aware of the "split cases" thing on the XB's. Ya learn something every day. Thanks!! Maybe this is one of the items that will be addressed for the '08 models? |

XB's and 04+ sportsters you have to split the cases. XBRR brought back the cassette transmission (thank goodness!). I sure hope to see this style case work its way into the rest of the XB line. It already bolts up to the frame! |

Yes, cases do have to be split but it isn't a 40hour job. A decent mechanic would knock this job over in less than a day if they had all the parts available. Even less if you deliver him just an engine. All I can say is do as much of the work yourself cause it is the only way you'll come outta this with any happiness from the bike and your wallet. |

My Bike's been down for 2 weeks awaiting parts for this exact problem, the shift drum needed replacing, tear down, split cases and replace. Also getting a new crank, rings, seals and cylinder hone while they're in there. I should be back on the road this weekend, but now I have to break it in again. This will be the longest 500 miles of my life. 23,000 miles. |

Kdan, I don't think you have to go through the whole engine break in again. All you need to do is make sure the new rings get mated to the freshly honed cylinders. An easy day in the mountains ought to do the job. |

Glitch - New rings, crank and seals in addition to the new shiftdrum. You don't think so? Cause it's a new crank too, I'll defer to Greg in service for his opinion, but I don't think I wanna take any chances. |
