Tonight installed recently rcvd. Drummer SS can, Buell race ECM, A.S.B. open air box kit w/ K&N, and Drummer catch can kit on an '06 XB12Ss and now I can't get the bike to run. It can barely idle (roughly) and only for a few seconds to roughly a minute then sputters out and dies. And if you so much as breathe on the throttle, the bike instantly shuts down and the exhaust smells very rich. I've attempted the tried and true disconnecting of the battery and unplugging the ECM for a period of time with no success. All the servo motor hardware and wiring have been removed and the bike has been triple checked to see if anything had been accidentally unplugged or disrupted. Extremely frustrated at this point and any advice or remedy experiences would be greatly appreciated!!! I'm wondering if a trip to Harley for a tps reset would remedy this or if I'll have to contact Kevin at KD Fab in the morning. Thanks in advance and your advice will all be greatly appreciated!!! |

Yep, you need a reset, for sure. Put your Stock ECM back in the bike, ride it to your local Harley dealer, switch ECMS in the parking lot, and have the dealer reset your Race ECM. Should charge you for a half hour labor . PS: Be prepared to love your bike even more when you see how nicely it runs and sounds with your new set up.

Is there a chance the bike will run lean with the open airbox? |

Bo_sox: Your doing my future mod. Please post so I can hear how it turned out and what you think. Thanks Now a question for the wise ones. When do you need or want to have a bike dyno-ed with this sort of mod. Is it when reprogramming the stock ECM? Advantages? Disadvantages? Can any one give me a quick lay of the land on this? Thanks. |

The race ECM has no manual adjustments, it does everything on it's own, so putting it on the dyno will just tell you what it's doing. If you have the stock ECM programmed by American Sport Bike it shouldnt need any adjustment, and unless the shop you go to has the correct software, they wont be able to make any changes anyway. |

I guess the dealer mechanic was talking dyno with the race ECM or they have the software. I'll talk with him again and American Sport Bike too. Thanks |

By switching to the stock ECM and running it down to the dealer, could there be a possibility of damage from running lean? Buell dealership is roughly 35 miles away. Or is this such a short distance not to worry about? Great suggestion by the way!!! |

Your in a marginal area(depends on the individual bike), put the stock filter back in with the stock ecm and make the trip.....Charlie |

Do not worry about it running lean on your ride to the dealer. After 10 mins or so on the highway at 3000+ rpm the bike will re-adjust to the intake and exhaust well enough. I rode mine with my Jardine and American Sport Bike open air box kit for almost two weeks before getting the race ecm installed and the tps reset. Major diference in power between the two ecm's. |

I have the Direct-Link software and have seen the ECM reset the AFV in as little as two miles of running under steady state conditions. If you are running in the learn mode (steady throttle, 2,000 to 5,000 rpms for the XB9) it is constantly adjusting for current conditions. If the ECM has to adjust the AFV for a non-stock intake/exhaust combination, it will run fine for that given RPM but may not be correct in another until the ECM can relearn the new conditions. |

That's kinda what I figured and after Kevin's reassurance yesterday, I've been ridding it for the last 2 days as my local Buell mechanic was off this weekend. Kevin stated to ride it at or above 3,500 rpm for 20+ miles and the stock ECM will make the neccessary adjustments without fear of stressing the motor. I took it on a 40 mile round trip journey on the freeway and the bike seems to be running flawlessly. Today I spent more time ridding it around town and on backroads and I have no complaints. That Drummer SS is a monster and the exhaust note is addictive!!! When the bike runs in the garage the downstairs windows rattle and you can feel it in the whole house. The bike sounds much more like a Harley then it did stock, but don't get me wrong here, it's also not overly obnoxious, it's more of a hard deep rumble than a high pitch shreek. And at cruising and accelerating speed it's mouthwatering!!! Keep in mind the A.S.B. open air box and K&N were done at the same time. And this is all done with a stock ECM! Tomorrow I'll be calling my Harley dealer to schedule a t.p.s. reset for the race ECM. This bike already feels like night and day over stock, I can't hardly wait until the ECM swap!!! My extended gratitude to Kevin at KD Fab as his customer service compares to nothing I've ever experienced before - A+! I waited over 4 months for the Drummer SS and all I can say is, "I would've waited 8"! |
