I have an 06 xb12s. It runs great, but I spend LOTS of time in very slow or stopped traffic. The fan runs constantly. I am considering getting the right side air scoop, but not sure how much that will help when you aren't moving. When stopped in traffic for a while, the engine gets hot enough that I got some pretty bad ping once I do get moving.

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a couple little fans to mount on the oil cooler, and tie them into the same system as the rear cylinder fan. Just wondering if anyone has tried anything like that, or if anyone has tried a larger oil cooler.

Also, I assume the rear cylinder fan really only cools the rear cylinder right? Anyone tried a fan in a right side front cylinder scoop?

I'm sure these engines can handle the heat of idling around in traffic, but coming from driving an old Mustang, I'm always very interested in having things run cooler.

Mattl,

Glitch was considering the same thing with his bike; he commutes in Atlanta. I suggested using a computer power supply fan on the oil cooler; they're 12V DC and it'd be pretty easy to rig up one or two on the oil cooler. Only downside is they're probably not very weatherproof, but they're not very expensive (~$15-20 at Radio Shack) or even free if you know where a few junk PC's are.

Not sure whether Glitch ever got around to trying it or not.

The right side scoop will help you get that back cylinder cooler quicker once you start back up.

If this is persistent issue, you might want to try a larger oil cooler and running Red Line 20W-60 oil.

Good luck!

Perhaps TWO oil coolers? Adds extra oil capacity and cooling area?

The computer fan idea sounds like it would work very well.

If you want to do that you would want something like 2 80mm Delta fans. They flow 80 CFM and are about the highest output small fans you can get. I'd think that a larger oil filter, a right side scoop and keeping the fins clean would be the best route. Use a toilet brush, bottle brush, dish brush, all that good stuff with bristles. Just go crazy in the right isle at the store and get everything you'll need. Makes short work of cleaning up the engine and dirt acts as a blanket on the cooling system : ).

The PC Fans was exactly what I was thinking. I just happen to work with computers, and have a HUGE assortment of various fans at work. I'll dig around for something. If I remember right, I had some with sealed electronics and bearings to protect against dust. I wonder if that would hold up to water at all.

Anyway, thanks for the input!

I doubt that your every day PC fan will flow enough air to really be useful...

Do some searching around though... you should be able to find some powerful 80-100mm fans that run on 12V.

cant you split lanes out there? i know some people dont want to. but i ride in traffic everyday, i just cruise through nice and slow, keeps the air flowing over the motor no problem. i have the right side scoop from trojan, my fan has not come on when the bike is running yet.

You may not even be having a problem so first confirm what kind of oil temperatures you're getting. Get an instant read thermometer from Wal Mart and during one of your hotter rides pull over and read the bulk oil temperature. If it's not over 200F I wouldn't worry about it. And if it is over 200F, run synthetic oil.

While you're sitting in traffic there is little air flow around the engine, but there's also less heat load going into the engine as well so the existing fan and oil cooler may already be enough to handle "parade duty".

First confirm your oil temp's and then see what you need to do.

Pupu, no can't split lanes. ARGH!!! I just moved here from CA and it is a very accepted practice of bikers there. Here, not only is it illegal, but some people actively block you if you try. Sheesh, a little sensitive about being stuck in a cage I guess?

Sloppy, you are probably right that I may not even have a problem. Like I originally said, I come from the mindset of cooler is better, but may not be the case with these engines? The thermo is a good idea.

If I do find some high-ish temps, I'll definitely look around for some good quality, high flow 12V fans. Most PC fans are pretty darn week, but we have lots of 1U servers that have some pretty heftly little fans in order to force the air all the way through the small chassis. Very loud though.

I think sloppy has the right idea.

If you do decide you need a fan, one ideal candidate would be to get a used XB cooling fan off of ebay and install that on the oil cooler, provided of course the electrical system can handle two at once!

The XBRR has a bigger oil cooler. I asked about it a while back. Anyone ever get a price or know of availability?

The XBRR cooler is pretty spendy... You need a new bracket and two oil lines along with the cooler itself...

Sgthigg,

As M1 Mentioned, it is very expensive to get an XBRR oil cooler setup. You have to get the cooler, lines, and bracket. They will end up running you just over $500. I can get them, though, if they are what you want. Do you NEED an oil cooler that size? Only if you are creating a lot of heat.

Thanks for the info. All my questions were answered. I think I will pass on it. Too bad there wasnt a cooler that was little bit bigger on the could add a little more oil capacity and heat transfer, at a semi reasonable price. Actualy for the race set up for the rr 500 doesnt sound bad for Racing.

Thanks again

Sgthigg, have you looked at what J&P Cycles has to offer?

Dang

Just like the like the right side scoop, they shorted us out of the Right side oil cooler...

Seriously, KTM's have a nice fan that would be about the right size, is 12volt and waterproof..
