It's polished, not chromed, but it gives a similar visual.

Aaaargh! Chrome belongs on a Buell as much as carbon fiber belongs on a Harley! The local dealer used to replace the oil filter on my old Cyclone with a chrome filter until I started INSISTING on the black filter. It looked stupid; the only bright and shiny thing on the whole bike. They probably had shelves full of the chrome filters because that's what MOST of their clientele wanted. Me, I'd like to find a black handlebar replacement for my XB12Ss with the same bend and rise. Do they exist? |

Hey Jaimec, I don't mean to burst your bubble, but decorate your bike the way you want to. Chrome and polished pieces belong wherever each of us decides they belong. I say chrome it, polish it, carbon it, whatever floats your boat, so to speak. |

Yeah over the winter i think i will have the pulley done. im also thinking about having the polished parts chromed.... to hard to keep that stuff looking good in the crappy weather we have up here in NY. Still considering the frame and swing arm... does any one know if there is a powder coat that is "chrome like"? Tim |

Yeah my polished wheels are a big PAIN in the ass. Any speck of dirt is visible from a mile away. While we're throwing opinions around, I think carbon fiber is played out. It's ugly to begin with, and offers no real benefit for the cost over other plastics. The small amount of weight saved is only going to matter at the highest levels of competition and even then I doubt it. (Message edited by pwnzor on August 24, 2006) |

I agree on the carbon fiber weight savings with you Pwnzor. For no more weight than you save, you could just have one less burrito for lunch and call it good. |

I try to visit the restroom immediately before I get on the bike, so there is a weight savings for the price of a flush! |

I like the polished look, I like chrome more, but my pocket doesn't. It is all personal preferance, I like the "flat black" look, but too many people are doing it, even magazines are starting to refer to it as the "flat black army". I'll mix and match mine however I see fit. I am in fact about halfway done sanding down my extra primary cover so I can polish it up. It is a pain, but it keeps me busy, and it doesn't cost anything more than some polish, sandpaper, and some elbow grease. Matt - you polish them yourself? (wheels) |

No, Laidlaw's Harley Davidson in Baldwin Park, CA damaged my front rim while changing the tire. Before I go on that tangent, I'll cut to the chase and tell you they sent the wheels out to some guy who polished them at his home workshop. Never met him and they wouldn't give me a name. While they were at it, I had the same guy do the pulley. I think the pulley came out the best. The invoice showed $375 per wheel but I know they didn't pay that much. I hate that dealership and don't recommend it to anybody. The wheels, they're ok but they could have done better on the front. I've got it off the bike now, and I'm going to work on it a bit. |

I like the high-tech look of carbon fiber. To me it looks better than the flat black plastic parts I'm replacing. Besides, unlike chrome, putting carbon fiber on the bike reduces weight instead of adding it. Also I recall from my bicycling days that the plating process can make the underlying metal more brittle... |

You're right about chrome adding weight, but it ain't much. My stuff is polished though, so it's actually a tiny bit lighter, plus I only had salad for dinner last night. |

Jaimec, Ever thought about having your bars powder coated? A friend recently had his bars done (not a Buell). Really looks nice. (Message edited by bcordb3 on August 24, 2006) |

I have an extra set of rims I am pondering stripping and polishing, but the wife wants me to sell them. I don't have the time to do it myself I don't think. I too, don't have any chrome, so the bike is not heavier. Besides with the type of riding I do, who cares if you add 10 lbs or take 10 lbs off. |

Chrome = more weight... HAAAAAA HAAA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Wow, that's funny. That's soooooo much weight, the bike must handle totally different! HAAAAAHAAAAA HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAA!!! |

Powder coating the bars... hmmmm... interesting thought... Something to do over the winter. How much "thickness" will that add? Just wondering how much of a bitch it'll be to get the switches, mirrors and grips reinstalled. |

Two things the shiny bits will not do. (for me at least) 1. keep me from riding.... i just cleaned about 5lbs of bus off the thing yesterday. 2. Strand me on the side of the road. i never got that one folks sorry. The look of my bike is just as important as the function and even though it can be a pain in the butt to clean that is all part of the motorcycle experience if you ask me. Tim |
