My understanding is that the "new 06 style" air vent (around gas cap) is a permanent part of the air box cover and not a seperate ring like the 02-05. Question is, how is it held on to the cover? glue? plastic welded? I have a chance to buy a 06 damaged air box cover and wondered if I could remove that ring somehow and put on my 04? |

Cannot help you... as my bike is in for accident repair. I'm sure someone else will see this thread and lend a hand though. Best of Luck! (Bump) |

It is indeed a separate piece (as in years before), however it is held in place by some sort of plastic 'welding', heat staking or what have you. Part of the airbox cover material is melted to hold the air vent in place. Of course, for enterprising individuals, there has to be a way to attach the new to the old. 1313 |

You should be able to use an epoxy to attach the ring to your other airbox cover. |

Thanks for the info guys. If the plastic welding is little spots, like I've usually seen, I could probably drill holes to take apart and re-attach with small stainless allen screws. Could look cool, maybe. |

"My understanding is that the "new 06 style" air vent (around gas cap) is a permanent part of the air box cover and not a separate ring like the 02-05." I believe both models have this trim ring mounted the same, the '06 is not a permanent part, but is also a 'separate ring' that is welded/melted to the airbox cover. The plastic has been welded or melted in little spots, or 'holes' around the inner rim. (Only about 6 or so?). You should be able to Dremel grind the melted part away, leaving clean holes. You could then just epoxy over these holes onto your older housing. If careful, you won't have to drill right through the vent and housing. |
