so im ride back home from camping to be with my girl and ii hit a little traffic going through a town. stopped for lunch (about 20 min) then back on the road. a little more stop and go and then on to the highway. that when she got pissed off and started hiccupping.(this happened once before but i was riding 2 up on a dirt road over a mountain at about 10-15 mph.so i let it sit for about an hour and she was fine)so this time i got off an exit at a mall and brought it to rest at the back of a sears auto center. let her sit for about 15min and thenfound a hose and tried spraying her down a little to speed up the cooling process. tried riding around the mall but she was not happy. she continued to hiccup and backfire so i brought her back and let her sit for like at least an hour and then decided to take her to get some fresh gas. but she wouldn't start. fan running, engine light flashing, so i figure she through a over heat code. reset battery. she started right up. took her for gas and she was still doing it when i would start off but it seemed ok when i got going and was moving. got gas, brought her back to sears and let her sit a little more. attempted to head home again but she didnt want nothing to do with it. called my girl and called brag roadside assistance.ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?

Throttle Position Sensor, maybe?

Don't spray your bike with water when it's hot. These bikes run better at temperature. If it wasn't pinging then it wasn't too hot.

Being too hot doesn't generate a trouble code. What it does is put the ECM into "skip spark" mode to reduce temperatures and the engine light will be on during this mode. Also your fan should run constantly at high speed until it exits this mode.

Get your TPS reset and then immediately get on the freeway and ride above 3000rpm for 15-20 minutes. Then you should be all right.

Check for "foaming" coils too. It could have bust due to heat.

If it continues to go into over heat mode even after it cools down there is a short in the ET sensor lead. Located above the rear cylinder.

"Don't spray your bike with water when it's hot."

Agree!!!! When you rapidly cool aluminum with cold water, cracks develop as does deformation. Not good!

i know, it is the most beautiful day out.

thanks for all your ideas though.

as for the water thing, it makes sense but what if you riding and its hot and then it just starts pouring rain? wouldn't that be the same as spraying it? because that happened earlier that day.it was like riding into a waterfall. cars slammed on there brakes and pulled over. luckly i had about an 1/8 mi between me and the person in front of me.

ride above 3000rpm for 15-20 minutes.

The ECM will reset the AFV in two to three minutes if the bike is ridden at a steady RPM and throttle position. The learn mode occurs anywhere between 2,000 and 3,500 RPM.

If the dealer has the capability of resetting the TPS, they can reset the AFV as well.
