I want to check the static timing on my '06 XB. The shop manual says to drill out the rivets holding the cover plate on but it is silent on replacing the rivets. Have any riders here done this procedure? |

usually the rivets get replaced with bolts since eventually they seem to vibrate loose and the cap starts to rattle
see how mine was before i finally fixed it. |

These are standard "pop" rivets. You need a pop rivet tool to install new ones. As mentioned above, lots of folks tap the plate and replace the rivets with screws, and do something fun to the timing cover while they are at it. Here are a pair of chrome button head 10/32 screws with the timing cover painted wrinkle black to match the engine cases.

FX1200, Are you having any timing problems? If so I would be interested as to where your static timing mark is after you check it. Thanks! |

No it is easy to do. The plate is only a cover and you wont get anything inside the bike. Did this to my bike as well. Tapped and screwed. |
