ok, so its 103 degrees with the heat index here in indiana today! I ride about 30 miles today one way to my uncles house with no problems exept i was burning up! On the way back, about 20 miles into my ride home at a stop light when my bike just dies!! WTF. so i push it off across traffic the shoulder and let the fan run till it quits which is about 2 min. Starts right up!! ok so im thinking it just overheated b/c i was in a part of town where i was getting some stop and go! the other 10 miles im listening for things to go wrong. Only thing i hear is that now the fan isnt running at all while the bike is running. It was definalty hot enough for it to kick on. Im thinking ohh great, my fan is broke now! Get home, shut if off, the fan comes back on, but it runs for like 4 or 5 min. It has never ran for more then 1 min, ever!!! Is there anything i should check? I have already been thinking im little lean b/c i do get some popping on decel. Im at 3,000 mile so i think il will go ahead and get my next service done soon just to be safe!!

When you restarted the bike did you turn off the ignition and go through the start up procedure?

Ok...just like the HD, the Buell will start in on "skip spark" mode...you were in stop and go traffic which is always cause for extreme heat....when you shut it off, the fan turned on, then when you turned it on after the fan had went off the fan didn't run...take your bike for a 10 minute ride....ride it pretty hard.....ride back home and shut it off...the fan should come on..if it doesn't ride it longer. but when you turn your bike off and the fan comes on....wait 30 seconds or so then turn your bike on and ride it another 10 minutes.....the fan shouldn't come on....i've done it many times...stopping and talking with friends for 20-30 seconds.....then start it up with no fan running.....hope it helped and made sense...nothing should be wrong with your bike....

I had the same problem with my XB9R when I had it. In extreme heat conditions, especially when you come to a stop and idle for a long time the heads tend to overheat. This can trip the rear head temp sensor and the bike shuts down. If the bike is mod'd without fueling compensation, it is amplified. Good luck.

mine over heated once, but it didnt shut down, it was just cutting out like stated above. my fan wasnt working, it didnt come on when i shut the bike off or when the bike was running. i messed around with some wires and been good ever since. i think the fan plug was just not seated or something.

yes. I shut the switch off and turned the key off as i was pushing it to the side of the road! I did the normal start up!

I thought it was normal, just wanted everyone opinion on this incase something else was wrong! thanks

If it is running ok now then I would just keep an eye on it. Maybe try to manually pull a trouble code. I would also suggest that you keep some extra fuses with you at all times. There are two extra in the fuse box but you need more than one of each. If you need the manual trouble code procedure then just let me know.

In 103 degree stop & go traffic after a 30 mile ride? Yeah. Even fuel does weird things in those conditions.

Is it because it's air cooled? Just trying to educate myself, not trolling or anything. I barely got my 32 year old air cooled Honda home the other day and it was only 90 degrees in stop and go traffic.

Any vehicle engine will run hotter than normal when faced with stop and go.
Add to that 85o+ heat and things just get hotter.
Add to that hot ass pavement + stop and go + a hot ass day, and you get a hot bike.
I think Buell did some "over engineering" and some extra conservitive safty enhancements.
On the way home the one day, it was 97o in the shade, and traffic was terrible, even for Atlanta standards.
The bike started running poorly, at first I thought I was out of gas. So I pull off the intersate and roll up to the gas station.
The fan pops on.
I pre-pay for my gas.
Walk back to the bike.
The fan's still on.
Only a gallon, head back in to get my change.
The fan's still on.
Get my change, as I'm headed out the door I hear the fan change speeds.
As I get to the bike, the fan's still running.
Having figured out the bike was running like shit from the heat, I just have a smoke and a Red Bull, while I wait for the fan to stop.
Of course as I pop the top on the Red Bull the fan stops.
I finish my smoke and Red Bull, hop on the bike and take the back roads home.
No more issues, although I did change the oil 1000 miles early because of this little episode.
I no longer ride the interstate.

Glitch,

Did that happen before or after your timing change?

FYI the fan will not shut off until 302 F in the rear head with the key off. Normal operarting temps are around 400 F.

Way before. I didn't have pinging issues when this happened.
The pinging was fairly resent.
All gone now, and I've even tried to make it ping.

That is good I didn't think it would have been the result of your timing change but I wanted to make sure. I am glad that your pinging is history!! The previous overheating problem was probably the result of over advanced timing.

while living in Phoenix, I never had a problem with my tubers OR my XB overheating.
And I rode through stop and go city traffic in 115 degree heat!
Never a problem.
I don't think it's normal for a bike to overheat and die.

Get home, shut if off, the fan comes back on, but it runs for like 4 or 5 min. It has never ran for more then 1 min, ever!!!With such high temperatures your XB seems to be normal. That fan, although noisy, does do what its there for.

What Ian didnt tell everyone is that the heat we are having is almost 100% humidity, I'm in South Bend 20 minutes west. It was just nasty the last week or so, I dont ride in this heat because its not fun to get blasted by hot wind. No mater how fast you go its hard to cool down. Dude send me a PM and maybe I could ride out there when it cools down, your the closest person I know with another XB.

I live in the Quad Cities(Illinois side) and my 03 9s was also heating up. The problem that our bikes are having in this heat and humidity is normal. My Buell mechanic(not Wiebler's HD) rides a very angry M2 cyclone. Runs ok, but also backfires terribly. He pointed out that even if the temp was 90 degrees but still 100% humidity, we will encounter diminished performance. A change that I have made that has helped greatly is by using BP 93 octane gas. My ride has the pro series ecm, pipe, and filter also. I am still having backfire on the decel, but the plugs check out fine and the fuel economy is still good. Better gas will help, but high heat and humidity make all machinery run like crap. I notice my beast really likes mid 70's to low 80's temp and less than 80% humidity. Top fuel economy and amazing high rpm performance.
