My first post, Hello I'm about done with learning on offroads and beater dualsports, and starting to look for my first real bike. I'm split between a Tuono, Speed Triple, or XB12. My question to you guys after reading around a little, is if it's possible to get the engine to reliably do 115hp/115tq, and if it is, how much it'd cost? Budget, incl. the bike, would be 10k, 11.5 tops.. Thanks in advance. (Message edited by carnage on July 27, 2006) |

Sure but by the time your done your gonna be in the neighborhood of $4200.00 in parts and machine work. Your still going to need to put it together. Best choice would be to have it put together and have it Dyno tuned before the motor is installed back in your bike. You'll need a exhaust system as well. Not cheap but it can be done. |

Carnage...what do you want to do with the bike? I mean, purpose-wise... What kind of riding?? |

Everything but going to starbucks. College everyday for a few more years, quick grocery runs, going to friends' near and far, roadtrips to nowhere for a few days or weeks at a time, and trackdays. I could probably be tempted to spend 13k, but that's it. |

Probably could get er done if ya buy a used low mile XB12. |

That's exactly what I use my XB12S for. Commuting. After so many years of owning it I still have to pry myself off of the thing when I have to do something! "Where's Beau @?, Probably riding that damn lightning again!" |

Probably could get er done if ya buy a used low mile XB12. Yea, since you're gonna have to go thru the engine and replace a lot of major components anyway, its condition won't really matter (as long as there aren't rods sticking out the cases or something). OTOH, for the kind of riding you describe, I think you'd be more than happy with a ~100 RWHP 12 which can be achieved with an exhaust, open airbox and Directlink tuned ECM for a LOT less money. |

It's on equal money spent that I'm comparing them. The Triumph is ok, but the Tuono and the 12 are the ones I'm really interested in. I've got this 12k budget I made just for this occasion, so if I get the 12 the difference in price is going into it anyway.. 115tq/hp is just an idea, what I want is to get the thing as close as I can to on par with the Tuono for trackdays and the fast parts of roadtrips. I haven't seen or heard of anything else on the bike needing modification, besides cheap things like the seat. |

I think you might want to go test a 12 and see about testing an Aprillia. |

I will. I guess my question is really, how much power would I reliably get out of 4k$ of mods? |

To hard to say really....who's doing the work...you or a pro. Good pipe is gonna cost ya on a average 5 bills. |

I reckon I ought to be able to figure it out on my own, but I've never done any real mechanical work, so unless I find some sort of walkthrough with all the critical details, I'll stay safe and let a pro do it. I did a few quick searches, but from what you say, it seems I can't just ask a shop for a 1250cc or 90" kit and ask for the price, or can I? I found these two, but I'm not sure what it means, i.e. if those are only partial solutions or completely functional packages. http://www.revperf.com/xl.aspx?action=perfKits http://www.nrhsperformance.com/ekitbuellxb12r.shtml Thanks for the help. |

Revolution would be Brian Nallin. His kit for what your looking for is $4200.00... you would have to put it together and tune it. So no I don't think you can accomplish it on your own. You'd really need some Dyno time to get it to run right. I'm debating on having some work done from him myself but not as much as your speaking of. If I do it it'll be this winter. I have it kinda made though being that he is a hour or so from me. |

BTW if I do it I'll pull the motor and bring it to him and have complete it tuned and all. |

At 115 hp you're looking at a thunderbike spec motor. When you go over 110 or so you really shorten the service life of the motor. If you are commuting on this bike and need to rely on it day to day I really do not recommend over building your bike for the job. At 100 hp and 86 ftlbs of torque I can tell you that my bike is plenty for anything I want to do on the street, and even if I went CCS racing, it's more motor than most people out there run, until you hit the expert class. Don't under estimate the value of low end torque on a commuting bike. Don't try to make the Buell something it's not. if you do you won't be happy with it. Take a test ride and see what they do. A good pipe, open airbox and Direct link tuning can net you 100rwhp in most cases on a 12, and it will be as reliable as the day is long, as long as you get an 06+belt or a chain, but that's another debate. |

Brian pretty much nailed it on the head. The 12 is really a good bike with just a couple mods. If you want to build and keep reliability you might think of a little less motor work done. The direct link I'm not completely sold on just yet. Considering the drummer has achieved it without direct link on a 12. Now if you are doing heads cams and the like you may want to think of it. I'm planning 1250 big bore light head work and Brians new cam grind with the race ecm.Thats if I do it but I'm getting real close to pulling the trigger on the decision. |

If you want a reliable and trouble free bike don't try and make a stock bike what it isnt. Pipe, airbox mods and a ecm will boost some power and still be reliable but if you want more than that look elsewhere. Also if off roads and dual sports are all you have ridden do you really need 115 hp??? Test ride some bikes and buy what puts the biggest smile on your face. For ME 100 hp is plenty to get my speed addiction in and pass cars w/o effort. Everybody is different but most find that once they quit looking at spec sheets and just figure out what moves them they end up with a bike they love. |
