I just searched for the thread that ran not too long ago concerning using an open airbox with stock ecm and exhaust. I can't find it. Anyway, as I understand it, I can run an open airbox, stock ecm/exhaust and stock air filter on my XB with no problems. That will give me better throttle response, right. I assume I would want to run the stock air filter and not the race filter. Does all this sound correct? I plan on installing a drummer catch can tonight and would like to do the open airbox while I'm in there. As always, thanks to all who respond. Gregg |

Just pull the snorkel out and see if that's enough for ya. |

Glitch, Just pull that plastic tube out of the frame? Will that help air flow? |

Just pull that plastic tube out of the frame? Yep, pull it out. Will that help air flow? You betcha! Once you get it out you'll see. |

Should I do that and the open airbox? I'm not really too concerned with throttle response, I just have a bunch of parts sitting around waiting to get put on! Gregg |

One more thing. This site is great, I'm not getting any work done today! |

Should I do that and the open airbox? Nope. I doubt that you'd get any benefit from an open air box with the rest of the bike being stock. |

Okay, while we are talking this "age old topic". I have a race ECM, Muffler and filter. If I open my airbox (similar to the 07) around the gas cap, will my bike still run okay? or would I have to make adjustments? Is there any benefit for me in the first place? Please help |

Yes it will run fine. All your doing is giving it more air. |

I just took a Dremel and opened the inner airbox by punching a bunch of little holes in it. Two things I noticed.....First off I like the sound that comes from the bike now...it sounds meaner, and second I noticed when I pulled into the garage that there were a few drops of oil coming out of a little black tube that hadnt dripped before. Should I be worried at all???? |

DONT DO IT!!! Yep throttle response will be alot better. (for a little while) It will sound better too. HOWEVER!! With the stock ECM the motor will run tooooo lean! At the very least you need a race ecm, tfi, or remapped ecm, to enrichen you fuel mixture to compensate for the added air you will have allowed it to get. |

Throttle response is one of the most important aspects of a street ridden motorcycle. |

I was under the impression that you can open the airbox up as much as you like, but the bike will only suck in a certain amount of air.....no matter how opened up it is. I was on the previous thread and a badwebber told me to open it up, run the bike at 3500rpm for about 20 min and the ecm would reset itself. Is that not the case??? |

Maybe I'm talking through my rearend here but isn't the stock exhaust so restrictive that opening the airbox up will only really work to a point because the muffler only allows so much flow out? I desnorkled last night and only noticed a small increase in intake noise. Throttle response is better now but it seems like I may have lost torque. The change was so minimal that it's hard to tell though. I did not ride over 3500 rpm for 20 minutes though, should I have? Gregg |

Al Lighton did some dyno runs with a stock Uly and open airbox. Your interpretation of the results may vary, but it seems that the stock ECM (with stock muffler) can adapt to an open airbox without running lean... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/17143/164053.html?1134191408 |

'05 XB9SX 1) Ripped the snorkel out of mine Then 2) Drilled 20 or so 10mm holes in the inner box. Noticed better throttle response with 1) only. Spins up quicker but still creamy smooth torque. Got extra noise and a slight drop in torque I think with the addition of step 2). Still running with 1 and 2 and I like the sound but there does seem a need to rev it a bit more to access the torque. Stock exhaust and stock ecm. Can't say I have noticed any symptoms of lean running even with the weather getting very hot here in the UK. |
