That doesn't look good. Are you sure the pinch bolts were all loose when you torqued the axle? What torque did you use for the axle?

I just put me wheels back on my bike last week and had the exact same thing. I did the install correctly and still had the space. So I took the bike around the block a few times and came back, loosend everything off and it was still there. I have rode about 200 miles on it and no problems. Makes me wonder if it was always there. I was thinking that maybe the wheel is supposed to be tight up against the right fork leg and the space is normal. Any thoughts?

gap is normal i reckon.

There is a step on the shaft, it tightens and pushes on the centre of the bearing.

Any one correct me if i am wrong,

Mine has it to, lets all go and look at our bikes to confirm this is normal or not.

Mine looks just like that, too.

Over 5000 miles since I last had the front wheel off.

I just changed my tires and yes, I noticed the gap as well. Actually, if there wasn't, the rim would make direct contact with the lower fork and I think that would be a bad thing.

Mine is an '03 but it has always had that small gap. When I first saw that I wondered and checked it all out...so far as I can tell the wheel doesn't move and everything feels solid.

From memory, 80 ft-lbs.

Better check it out to be sure...and for your information, some torque wrenches don't work counter-clockwise. My Craftsman clicker-type doesn't.

Good luck,
Bill

Factory manual says 39-41 ft-lbs for the front axle (53-56 Nm). Remember to use anti-seize and it's left handed thread (I bet you knew that!)

Yeah, my bike has that gap too (about 2mm between the LHS of the wheel and the left fork leg). I worried about it when I first noticed it, then thought for a second, and realized this: the beauty of this design is that the axle and wheel are always aligned perfectly with the right fork leg, which carries the brake caliper (and therefore the brake rotor is properly aligned with the caliper). The left fork leg does not need to be aligned as closely, and is therefore allowed a bit of slack in it's positioning. This would not be possible in a front end with dual rotors, but the Buell design is simple and "elegant," in engineering terms.

It's normal. Mine looks just like that. I've done a Track Day and ran at the Gap with no problem. It's meant to be like that as stated above.

Wow glad you asked that question! Saved me from doing it. I never realized that gap was normal and thought it had to do with my lowside a while back. Bike steered fine so I never worried about it. One less thing to think about!
