Does anyone have picks of how the air gets into the airbox on the 2006 XB's. I know it is now directed thru the vents next to the gas cap. I'm wondering if I can make that change to my XB12R and then block off the air hole in the frame thru the air scoop. My understanding this would allow more air to the back cylinder and make a little less use of the Darn FAN. Please let me know if anyone has done this or has good info on it. Thanks

Dan

It'll work fine. I've done it on my bike.

Not sure about how much reduction in fan operation there was though, I did the mod just after I got the bike.

I have an '04 XB12S... what parts would I need to perform this conversion, please. My airbox intake is thru the frame and I'd like to block it off, also...for the same reasons. Thanks!

That's exactly what I've read and it makes since. Blocking the hole in the frame in the air scoop only diverts more air to the rear head I would think. I need some pic's though of how the air gets into the air box, basically a pic of with the air box cover off of an 2006. I wonder if I can drill holes in the existing "gas cap ring" and simulate the new ones? I'm not sure if the new "cap ring" is expensive anyhow.

I had a piece of ABS plastic in my shop that I cut to fit the underside of the airbox bottom and epoxied that in place.

Then I just removed the black plasic piece around the fill neck at the front of the outer air box cover.

I cut away the airbox into my own version of an open air box kit.

I also covered the entire under side of the airbox base with the aluminum heat
duct tape to reflect heat back down instead of absorbing it into the airbox.

I have an '06 XB12S
You are correct that the air intake is now through a screen immediately behind the fuel cap. To then get the air to the filter, you will need to cut slots/holes/vents in the black inner airbox. Many people have already done this to open the airbox up a bit more. (A search should find those threads).
The '06 only had slots cut in the RHS; but the '07 have slots in both RHS & LHS as well as top front.
A few points;
The air inlet screen behind the fuel cap is not a spare part, it is actually heat bonded to the outer airbox cover. You will have to drill or Dremel holes into the older style black plastic shroud. (Again do a search as others have already done this).
To blank off the hole that comes up through the frame, probably the easiest way is to glue a plastic/tin/aluminium plate to the underside of the inner airbox base. On the '06 bases, (if I remember rightly?) the base is a different molding.
You would probably also want to seal off the air inlet tube through the frame from the underside?

Hope this helps.

I need some pic's though of how the air gets into the air box,

Just have a look at any of the Translucent cover bikes, and you can see where the slots have been opened in the sides of the inner airbox.
I just checked on the Buell web site.
Look under the 'Colors' section of the Lightning XB12S, the side profiles clearly show the slots inside. The Valencia Orange is clearer to see!
Cheers.

Yes

I'm not sure if the new "cap ring" is expensive anyhow.
Not available separately from the whole airbox cover.

I just removed the whole black plastic piece myself. it is quite easy to cut the piece, but much harder to make it look good : )

One thing I've noticed is that the fan works a lot less once you start getting the mixture right with Direct link. That would make sense if the bikes are set-up EPA-lean as would seem the obvious case.

They changed the map in the ECM to account for more/coooler air. They had to.

Thanks everyone, great information. Still wondering with my race ECM, if I'll be fine with the different air flow and all. All this re-mapping has wondering if I'm going to mess something up by shooting air thur the top. I don't plan on cutting as many holes as the 07, so maybe I'll be fine.

You should be just fine with the race ECM.

How can Buell claim that the new airbox, with the extra holes cut in it, can make no more noise than before?

To meet EPA standards they would have to have it tested.

Would it be worth modifying my 06 airbox to match the 07? what would you gain by doing this on an 06? Would the 06 ECM be able to adjust?

I've already cut the extra slots in the left hand side of my '06 airbox (to match the slots in the right hand side). I am not sure if I want to cut any more holes as I don't want any more induction noise.

hello guys,
does anyone try to cut extra slots into a XB9sx'06 airbox? i've seen on buell web site only 12s have this kind of "patch"...
in italy we are now discussing the same and comparing the feelings of some riders, a '06 trimmed Airbox (only rhs) with a K&N filter seems/sounds to have the same results as a '07 trimmed airbox (rhs+lhs) with stock filter.
discussion is even about the stock ECM: is it enough for these simple configurations (K&N + '06 trimmed airbox VS '07 Airbox and std filter on a '06 bike) or we need an extra ecm mapping?
thanks a lot
