Just got back from a 1500+ mile trip and noticed the fuel pump sounds louder than normal at key on and while engine is running. The bike runs great, just the loud pump. Anyone else had or have this condition? |

See if the bike is low on fuel at the same time. I forget when the new fuel pump came out, it was either 04 or 05. The bikes with the old fuel pump generally get louder as the fuel level decreases. |

It is just a little air in it. Notice it usually happens when you are low on fuel? You won't have a problem. |

sounds normal to me, If you have an older XB. Thats one of my favorite things about my buell that loud fuell pump. I love the look I get when I switch it on. People ask "Whats that noise." I say its the flux capacitor. They also ask about the fan noise. I say "Thats the jet turbine winding down." Then I will make some comment about "I knew I should not have use the afterburners in that turn back there, I should be able to pass the gixxer with out engaging it." |

03-04's fuel pumps have a tendency to cavitate. It doesn't hurt anything, it's just noisy. If it bothers you that much you can just update to the 05+ pump. |

I should explain that I've owned the bike since new. It's an '04 XB12R, it now has just under 20,000 miles on it so I'm familiar with the regular fuel pump sound. This is louder than what it's been in the past but it appears there's no need to worry. Thanks, guys... |

gearhead I have the same bike, almost 30k miles now. Fuel pump is loud, quiet, loud, quiet, blah blah blah. Doesn't seem to be a pattern, rhyme, nor reason to it. Works fine. |

If your bike starts to see low pressure from the fuel pump, your engine light will come on. I forgot what the trouble code was, I just remember there is one. |

The new fuel pump was introduced mid-way in the '05 year. The '05 service manual has info for both, and instructions on how to tell which one you have if you have an '05. Mine has the old. It sounds a bit like an air-raid siren, but still works... so far. |

Fuel pump is also louder when near empty. I suppose it has to do with greater cavitation due to lower head pressure. |

Ilike how they sound when the bike is running, but when i turn my key and hit the run switch mine sounds like a dying cat before i hit the start button, its actually kinda embarassing. |

Concor, you ain't kidding... the pump is loud at startup. I thought something was wrong with my bike when i first got it. The other day, when I was nearing empty on the fuel tank, I could hear the fuel pump over the sound of my Drummer... i kid you not. i thought something was wrong until i filled my tank and it went away. |
