I just got back from a disappointing morning at my local Harley/Buell dealer. They fitted my new race ecm (I fitted the race kit muffler myself) but couldn't get it to run properly. It wouldn't idle properly and responded very poorly to the throttle with lots of coughs and splutters. They had to put back the stock ecm so I could ride home. The workshop manager said that maybe I have a dud ecm. He also claims that it is not unusual for bikes to run poorly with a race ecm - which I find hard to believe. I am booked in for them to have another try to get it working next week as as the specialist Buell mechanic wasn't in this morning - only his 3rd year apprentice. |

I suspected as much also. But they are the experts so what could I do? The fact that they told me to come back after the weekend makes speaks volumes. The frustrating thing is I have a rideday tomorrow and was hoping my bike would be sorted. |

Sounds like the TPS was either not reset, or reset improperly. If you still retain the original ECM, you might think about reinstalling it. Only takes about 15 minutes. Probably do your motor less harm than running it as is. |

The dealer reinstalled my stock ECM but didn't re-adjust the TPS. Is this a problem? |

Is this a problem? No. Once an ECM is set to your bike it "knows" your bike. There are bad ECMs out there. In the past few weeks I've seem two of them. One was for an XB9 and the other was for an XB12. No amount of setting or resetting would get the bikes to run right. |

The TPS is already "adjusted" to the stock ECM. There seems to be so many Buell dealers out there that don't seem to know any thing about them. When I had my first service done by my local dealer, which I consider to be fairly competent, they put a full 3 quarts of oil in. And did not seem to believe me when I told them it was over full and took only 2.5 qt. and had to look it up in their manual. I will put my money on the TPS. |

That's pretty much what the tech at the dealer said. Trouble is, he didn't seem sure and asked me to come back after the weekend so that their resident expert could double check. |

It's good to hear someone say that. A second opinion is always good. Sounds like you've got a decent service dept. |

"The dealer reinstalled my stock ECM but didn't re-adjust the TPS. Is this a problem?" Yes an no. If he reinstalled your stock ECM and didnt reset your tps. And the bike runs fine NOW with the stock ECM he probaly(more like a definatetly) didnt reset it when you had the Race ecm installed. |

For what it's worth: I encountered a similar situation when swapping an '05 (stock) XB12 ECM, for the '06 ECM that came with the bike (Ulysses.) Make sure the bike is at operating temperature (160C.) when the Race ECM is installed and the TPS is reset. That's what it took to get my bike to run right.} |

Not only do they need the tps reset, but also need to be rode at a constant throttle to 'learn' the new fuel values. I have seen bikes that once we reset them they run like crap, but after a nice long ride, they run great. |

I just solved a bad sputter and pop problem when a friend who is a techno bueller told me to take the bike out on the thruway and ride it for a few miles at a steady 1/4 throttle and the bike would create a loop with the sensors, injection and electronics and reset and correct its self....Damn if it didnt work...do I smell an AI (artificial intelligence) and that your Buell can learn from its mistakes...yikes |

I do not know the answer so I am going to ask the question............ Is there a battery or is the settings written to some read only, nonvolitile memory in the ecm? If so how long is it good for, remember the settings? |

The settings dont go away, not sure of the exact type of memory it has. But the bike is constantly learing and re-learning when you are riding within the specific parameters. You can read a bit about it in your owners manual, and a bit more in depth in the service manual. |
