I am sure there are many reasons a bike will pop on deceleration. I am sure some one on our forum must have mentioned this- so sorry if I am being late on topic or redundant---> I solved my "popping" by using Permatex exhaust sealer at the junction that you changed (like the point where the slip on fits to the header) I used Permatex Muffler and Tailpipe Sealer" item # 80335 MTK-1 under 2 bux at any auto parts store)- Cheers |

Really? And it worked? I just installed a Drummer and now I'm getting popping on deceleration. I re-used the same torca clamp on the slip fit as it was only the first time I had it off. Could this be the cause of my problem. I just don't see how that could cause the popping... I thought popping was from running the bike too lean. |

My guess us the clamp is not the problem- 2 bucks and some time- sorry to sound *not in step* with the "my bike is running lean" group- but give it a try and let me know |

An exhaust leak caused by the header not seated properly or a leak at the clamp can cause backfiring on deceleration. A leak is the first and simplest thing to fix that I'd look for, especially if exhaust was recently removed. Been there, fixed that. |

Direct link tuning cured mine of all popping on decel. I can wrap it all the way up to redline, in any gear, and let it decel and it's just smooth...smooth...smooth. Just perfect engine braking and I LOVE it. Popped like a mofo before. Didn't notice so much with the stocker, but as soon as I threw the Spec. ops on...bing bang boom. Anyway, ALL gone now...best $ spent so far! .02 TK |

Last year a issue of Cycle World had a short item on this subject in Race Watch. It seems like the 2-stroke guys could not come to grips with the de-cell popping of the new 4 stroke motors. As explained there, at speed when the throttle is closed the map requirements for the fuel injection are changed. For the RPM the bike is now at there is not enough Air/Fuel mixture to support combustion. As a result unburned A/F builds up in the pipe and muffler, until it gets to a point close enough to the exhaust tip for reversion to add fresh air to the mixture. when this happens it pops. In the dyno room we do one of two things to reduce it. We add 6% fuel to Zero T/P from 1500 to red line or starve it by going -20% at the same T/P. You can also just open the throttle a very little bit and the engine ECM now thinks it is running at a different T/P which it is. The new Moto GP Guys have this all taken care by the ECM which in fact does open the throttle a few thousands of an inch. ... Terry |
