I live in the high desert...temps are over 100 deg now on a regular basis. What can I do to keep the engine/exhaust heat off my right thigh ?...it gets so hot I have to swing my leg out, even doing 70 mph. Mike |

Last Month, my Mom asked me to send this picture to anyone who complained about how hot it was. This is Winnipeg in May!

The wrap idea sounds good (supposed to keep the heat inside the pipes, right?), plus Odie's shields. I may do both myself depending on how hot things get next month. |

Yeah with the wraps the heat stays in the pipes (more heat from tailpipe but I don't think that'll matter) and less heat on your leg. |

Getting towards the high 80s here in England and yesterday I put my undersuit, back protector and gloves in the freezer and filled my helmet with a plastic bag full of ice for an hour before I went out. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh it was bliss, pure bliss to get kitted up in that ice-cold gear ! It stayed cold just long enough to get out on the open roads and then the breeze took over |

CERAMIC COAT ya Headers n ride Faster Mate... 90 mph an ya Won't Notice the Heat. I Live in Alice Springs where 100F is Average fer 6 Months a Year. Besides, Ceramic Coatin LOOKS F**KIN SWEET~!! http://img8.picsplace.to/img8/15/Brutus_5.jpg http://img8.picsplace.to/img8/15/Brutus_Best.jpg N x |

I ride in the desert quite a bit. I have the Jet Hot Headers from American Sport Bike. I also have the right side scoop which Al also sells. Both REALLY make a difference in the heat. Ditto using Red Line 20W-50 oil in the engine. Good luck, it IS hot out there. |

Know something? You don't notice the heat if you're wearing leather pants or an Aerostich suit. What do you mean you don't? |

The stock pipes are things of beauty. This may be a little counter intuitive but if you wear a thicker pant you wont feel it as bad. Your legs may be a lil warmer in general but I feel the engine heat much less with thick riding pants on. |

Wrap Sux... JMO Coat em... ya may Only Reduce the Heat by (I'm Told) 10-20% but By Crikey they LOOK a Million Times Better than Wrap Shite.. (LOOK: http://img9.picsplace.to/img9/12/Nart_Uly_Jardine_003.jpg now Tell ME Wrap Looks Better?!? ) n Ya Don't Have ta Worry Bout Getting them WET. N x |

Note that black ceramic coating can actually increase radiated heat. The emissivity (propensity to radiate heat) for the black coating can be high compared to the natural metal finish. |

To clarify, the surface temp of black ceramic coated headers will be reduced compared to stock, but the amount of heat radiating from the surface can actually increase compared to stock. The silver finish ceramic coating is probably a good choice if heat is your main concern. |

Hmmmm I Wonder how Yad Gauge that Blake? I'm ONLY Goin on what I was Told by some Groovers.. but the Blokes that did the Work also said same... Bout a 10-20 Decrease... But as the Pipes are Coated Inside n Out.... i'm sure it';s Gotta be Better bthan Stock.... I Just Reckon the Wrap Looks Shite.... but the Stock Pipes LOOK WORSE.... Nasty Colour Indeed... yad Think They Could at LEAST Coat them as Standard or Choose a BETTER Grade Steel. N x |

I installed the heat shield. It gets too hot to touch (aluminum conducts heat very well) I wrapped under it and where it connects to the pipe. Much cooler now. |

Blake was trying to express that there are 3 kinds of heat 1)conduction......you touch something hot directly 2)convection......air blows across something hot and brings the heat to you 3)radiation......transfer of heat as radiation with nothing carrying it, like from the sun to the earth. Silver does have the lowest emmisivity, while black is at the other end of the scale with the highest. Why do you think they paint wood-stoves flat black? It can be measured with the proper instruments, but in this case it really isn't needed. This is a long established scientific standard. |

Errr OK... so ya sayin BLACK Coated (Ceramic in n OUT..yes INSIDE also.. wouldn't THAT Counter ya Theory???) Radiate MORE Heat than Stock Pipes? Whatever Really... I Care Not... but ME Opinion is the Wrappin Looks SHITE...JMO ok.. that WAS Me Original Point here.,. Hence a LINK to a Pic of the Headers on me Bike. But Thanks fer the Science Lesson... I'm Only a Trade Qualified Engineer with Hydraulics n Pneaumatics as me Speciality... Science Aint me Strength. N x |

Thanks Brian! Me no write good. I sincerely appreciate your clarification on the issue. Nortman, I understand your opinion on the wrap. I think wrapping looks great on some bikes, not so great on others. It sure does work well. As to the coating issue with black colored coatings... Most any black colored surface is in general a much more efficient emitter than a metalic surface. Thus even with a lower temperature, the outer surface of black ceramic-coated header pipes can radiate the same or even more heat than uncoated stock pipes. I think the stock header finish looks great. Its easy to maintain with a little metal polish, Eagle One brand is the most highly recommended but others work well too. Polishing a little will tend to further reduce the emissivity of the header pipes. Fun stuff to talk about. Pneumatics eh? Would that be hot air that you are specializing in? I'm pretty good with my own hot air. |

What Blake said...the black coating has an emissivity 2-3 times that of the silver coating, so it will radiate more heat. Some more reading can be found here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/179639.html?1146019343 |

"the black coating has an emissivity 2-3 times that of the silver coating, so it will radiate more heat. " that sounds so technical, I don't remember you using big words like 'emissivity' when you were contemplating jumping on that pool dome in Show Low, AZ last year, at the SpringFast ride.

Kdan, I'm wondering what your summer is like? (in Winnipeg?) - May here is start of my winter, but being a southern hemisphere person my idea of cold morning is having to put a warm shirt on under my jacket, however looking at that pic in May (summer?) I am wondering what chance to do much riding in those parts!? Sure makes me feel for riders with tough weather conditions. |
