Now this is a weird one? Earlier......I got home from my trip to the dealer.....I was convinced the exhaust was too loud. Just started the bike to put it away and it didnt seem that loud. So I took a trip around the block without my helmet. Not that loud. hmmmm must be at highway speed. so out to the state route.....hmmmm still not that loud. Put the helmet on and the exhaust resonated in it and was almost unbearable. It is a 8 year old shoei.....has anyone heard of such a thing. I am completely baffled. Ya put the helmet on and down the state round and it was wayyyyyyy tooo loud again. Just crazy. your thoughts. |

maybe the fact that the helmet is 8 years old might have something to do with it. If you want to keep the helmet try replacing all the internal padding. Or just go buy another. Hope that helped a little. Smokescreen |

Without the helmet you have mucho wind noise, even at low speeds. Enough to drown out the exhaust note. NUTS |

Replace that old helmet! The lining is probably very worn down and compacted. You should buy a new helmet every 5 years anyway. |

8 years old, holy cow. Its time for a new lid. I get a new helmet every 2-3 years, if not sooner. I think most are only rated for that long. I would be suprised if a helmet that old would hold up if it was tested in such a way. Your head is worth a new skid lid, just do it. As far as louder exhaust with the helmet on.... I agree with NUTS about the wind noise and all. |

probably has a lot to do with resonance too. Your lid "likes" the frequency the exhaust in at and rings like a bell. It's also probably a sign your lid is too loose. Most people buy helmets a least 1 size too large. It just gets worse with age and wear. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet at least every five years, if not sooner. |

Thanks for the advice guys..... The story behind the helmet....I bought it to race go-karts.......long story but raced one season and couldnt afford the tire bill per weekend. Put the helmet up...... I had an open face bell helmet I wore with my old bike....big fairing...... It went into the trash after I sold the bike....it was beat up. I am going to borrow my buddys ICON and try it and see if it is any better. I did buy some ear plugs at wally world this afternoon. So we will see. |

Icons in general are rather noisy helmets too |

I have worn several different types of helmets, and my XB9R is very loud in all of them. The mid bike exit point of the exhaust is what makes it loud in a helmet, I think. I have a Latus pipe which is fairly loud anyway. It is definitely louder with a helmet because of the resonance and exit point. |

Sound is a big thing in my field. Just for the hell of it try setting the conditions to make the noise the loudest. Then move your head the farthest away from its normal position. Look back, down, up, slouch, ect. See what happens. |

Deuceman beat me to the punch... He's right. The sound is reflecting off the pavement and up into your skidlid. Sometimes I think my bikes are loud... until I take a short ride with my helmet off. Not so loud. I own several high-end helmets and they all have the same results. I just enjoy the sound and keep ridin'. |

Yo, findme Buckeye. Call your insurance writer and get a rate reduction for that "4 wheelers can't miss me" audio upgrade. LOL plunk down some dead presidents for a new mellon protector and rip it. If Its still to loud go back to stock or put it on the block. remember your choices on the street are few. Quiet and dead or LOUD AND ALIVE. You Choose.

You may have just found the exact sound frequency of your helmet's construction... Essentially everything has a frequency, and it's quite possible your helmet has met it's match! hahaha! But seriously, try jumping on another bike and see if it does the same thing, chances are probably not... Beware! Just like when the fat lady sings, and shatters the windows, just the right frequency could shatter your helmet (Ok, chance in hell! But last week an airplane did crash into someones house in my town and killed a guy sleeping, sh** happens!)... |
