Read my Ducati test ride thread--I demo'd a bunch of 'em a few days ago, and came away even more impressed with my Firebolt!

Radical Principles...everything that makes a buell a buell..the patents and the unique engineering...

http://www.buell.com/en_us/buell_way/buell_on_buell/radicalprinciples.asp

I watched these videos endlessly...it'll TOTALLY contaminate you....corrupt you ....and you'll fall in love...

You won't find this kind of passion anywhere else.. I will tell you this...I was in a car accident many years ago (after which I found I could no longer get on a bike without having an anxiety attack) and have worked in health care my entire adult life. I have seen every horrible thing imaginable in terms of human damage that occured while riding on a motorcycle. I swore I would never ever get on a bike, passenger and definitely not as a rider. Bikes scared the crap out of me.

Last year I was introduced to the world of Buell..I actually got on the back of a firebolt and I was immediately hooked. Less than a month later, I took the class and owned my first Buell.. I know, there is no other bike like the Buell...and I conquered my fear, inadvertantly, because of the passionate engineering that Buell poured into these bikes. Those videos and these people here helped me overcome my obstacles and find a new hobby and lifestyle that I absolutely love.

HOLY FREAGIN MOLY DUDES! I stopped by the Buell dealer on the way home, which happens to be just a block from where I work and on my way... They actually had the xb12s on Demo to ride! FREAKIN I'M GOING OUT OF MY MIND! I can't get over the fact the I put 20,000 miles a year on my bikes and this thing has the power to excite me this much! I'm hooked bad folks! I gotta arrange the financing somehow, gonna be hard but whatever I gotta do I will.... Man that thing was such a comfortable ride, I could ride coast to coast on that bad boy! I tested an '05 12s but I'm sure I'll be pickin up an '06, unless someone can tell me what the differences are and if they are really worth the price change... I think they're willing to deal pretty good on the '05 models they have... I tell ya, they just must not be sellin out here very well, like I said before I never see 'em, but all 3 of the big Harley shops in town are also sellin Buells, seems nuts that nobody is ridin 'em!

IT'S TIME TO WAKE SOME FOLKS UP! Literally and figuratively! Damn such an awesome bike!

Oh ya those videos, I did watch those, for some reason I didn't think that was Erik Buell because I read a news interview article with his picture on it and just looked different... Ya these are some sweet bikes, I'm kinda of curious about how the 12Scg and 12Ss bikes would feel in comparison... I dunno, I think the 12s is for me...

Now I actually got to looking at the cityx with it's clear airbox cover and saw the airbox which I hadn't before... It has slots cut out of it at least as far as I could see on the right side near the rear, I've heard of folks talking about cutting holes in their airbox, or doing the open air box conversion and now I kinda have some questions.
1. Are folks talking about cutting more holes around the box or was I just looking at '06 models which have cut holes in it now, and older models didn't have them?
2. What does the open airbox conversion kit make it look like? Is the top of the airbox just completely removed and the filter held down by something that just sits over the top of it with a bolt through the middle?

If anyone knows or has pix that'd be awesome... I love the bike as is, but I think I'd want to have the exhaust, airbox, ecm, catch can, right side air intake, etc. mods done right when I get the bike, and have it Dyno tuned... Or would ya not be able to do a good tune on a bike that hasn't even been broken in? If so, maybe even order the parts before I get the bike... Thanks again folks!

Hey,Ride, one thing you will notice on any forum like this(I go to the Ford Diesel forum and Triumph forum also) is you will hear from the dissatisfied folks but most of the riders that are not having problems don't bother to post,so take the number of complaints with a grain of salt.

That's good advice Fireman! Makes plenty of sense too... I was almost letting myself get discouraged, I mean we have plenty of 100 degree+ days out here and was wonderin if I'd be commiting suicide by relying on an aircooled bike with a motor thats so tucked up in a bike like the xb's is... From what I've learned, the fan does a pretty good job, but with a right side air scoop and synthetic oil it seems like ya can keep that rear cylinder a lot cooler... Any other recomendations on that subject anyone? I know I'll probably heat wrap the pipes, partially just because I think it looks bad a** but would be curious if anyone knew of any more things that would help the motor stay cool.... Thanks again!

I'm sure someone probably mentioned it and I missed it, but if you want to hear how the different pipes sound go over to Al's site at american sport bike and download the exhaust shootout. He has pretty decent audio clips of the all the different pipes in action. Welcome to the addiction!

The cut airbox was started on the new models (06) when they went to the new
style air intake (around the gas cap) It appears they may have taken the hint
from fan sites such as thin one;) People are cutting their airboxes MUCH more.

The 06's also received an updated transmission and clutch (easier pull)
and quieter/smoother. The 06's also got the new swingarm.

Indeed , there are slats on the sides of the 06 inner airboxes.
Indeed, the clutch pull is greatly improved; I could pull with little finger probably if I tried.
Indeed, I need a new word to start sentences with.

First, problems are magnified on the forums because the overwhelming majority do not
post "no problems again today" threads.

Oh Really?! I think I saw one a few moments ago... odd.

Nice! I would love to have some confidence regarding the exhaust/hi-flow air filter mods, as I've heard mixed messages... Seems like some folks are losing power after the mods or having the bike dyno'd then hours later it runs like crap... Kind of wierd, never heard of that happening before... But then again, like ya'll said, no-one's here to talk about how great their bike ran today! HAHAH! Thanks again folks! Oh yes, Indeed, thanks again!

Ah, the Buell Race Kit. The XB kit consists of:

Muffler
ECM
Air Cleaner
and removal of snorkel ('04 and older?)

...then reset the TPS and yer rippin'. As mentioned in an earlier post, check out the muffler shootout. The amount of effort expended, the information obtained, and the excellent report published is a "must read" for any Bueller or potential new owner.

The sound emitted by the Race Kit muffler is "not too loud - not too quiet," in my opinion... which is what I wanted. Hell, I'm sure all the mufflers sound great... it's just a matter of what you like. I like the added performance punch and sound as reasons for the purchase. I have not modified my airbox... just the new K&N filter. Bike runs great at all rpm's and speeds... no burps or farts.

Ride,
Im another 06 owner (XB12R)I used to have a CBRF3. The Buell is just something else, its a perfectly well balanced bike for the everday rider and pretty much anyone just short of racing against Rossi, or Hayden IMO. Thats what people fail to understand, its not about what make of bike the pro's are racing that makes them the best, its the people on them that make them do such for lack of a better word; amazing things. I would have owned a pair of Jordans a loooooong time ago if I fell for the old the pros are using it so it will make me JUST like them bit. Jap bikes are great, and I wish I couldve kept mine that way I could alternate days between american and japanese but the bottom line is who really has the skills to handle a Jap bike like the pros? For everday life, the Buell handles well and is fast enough for any highway.
On my CBR I had chick strips on my tires because I couldnt handle it proficiently enough in the twisties. since, Ive learned how to really get down there all the way to the tip of the tread w/o all the effort because the 12R is that flickable.
Myths about Buells and HD will always be there, but the truth is the powerplant has come a long way, and doesnt live up to the myths anymore.
Fianlly, I see them looking out of the corner of their eye at every stop light, curious just as the next but once on the net thats when they like to hide behind their Jap bike MotoGP reputation...Too bad they cant unleash even a fifth of what those bikes are capable of sad, sad, sad.
I guess adults too buy the Jordans for the above reason

Hahahah ya, I love my Honda, and I ride up in the twisties here in NorCal regularly, but need a machine that is more everyday rideable and friendly, but also still fun... The xb12s seems like the perfect answer... I'm working on getting the funds ready, THANKS FOLKS!

I don't play basketball but I have literally a whole rack of Jordans in my closet. They are simply the most comfortable shoes around in my opinion.

I don't race but I bought a race bike. It was a mistake, $16500 wasted. Then I bought my Buell. A much better fit. I am neither capable of, nor inclined to, riding to the maximum potential of either bike. Having a bike who's capabilities exceed that of the rider is the norm. For most people, no matter how hard you push the equipment it can usually outperform you, because to the bike it's not about bravery. The turn to the bike is as the bolt to the wrench.

Now, there are those people who buy high end bikes and instantly start going to every bike night and join all kinds of clubs hoping to become cool. I think those might be the people you were referring to, Vaneo1.

For me, I'm content to ride my streets dusting jap bikes between the stoplights while wearing my jordans and breathing in the decadence....!

Ride365, I have had my xb125s since March of this year... and I ride it to work every day except if it is raining very hard and haven't had any problems yet. I think the bike sounds decent enough stock and I haven't been super impressed with the power increases you get from aftermarket mufflers... of course I do not do track days or ride over 100 mph very often either. I hear that if you leave the exhaust stock that the Buells are super reliable. If I can suggest 2 things... get some bar-end mirrors or other quality aftermarket mirrors (the stock ones vibrate so bad it's hard to see anything in them) and get the Buell Select seat... it is 100000 times more comfy than the stock seat.

pwnzor,
You are arguing my point! I have come across many Jap bike owners who hide behind their bikes capabilities but fail to ride competently enough to unleash a fraction of their bikes power. Basically what Im saying is that I cant belieeeeve how "those" people (not inclusive of all)think its the bike that makes them. FYI nothing against the shoes, just as long as you didnt think you can jump higher.
Ride were family here you will always face a little bickering back and fourth. Just start a thread, and title it I have the best exhaust" hee hee

I was thinking about whether it would be nice for questions like this to have a blog category where people could post a running account of life with their Buell (no direct replies, just the originator's story about their Buell) including mods planned or made, perceptions about the bike, whether certain suspension adjustments helped or not, etc.?
I am overwhelmingly happy with my mechanically stock Ss having ridden 3500 miles in just over a month (stock Ss seat is great for me) and heading to LA and San Diego for a week starting after a #@%! 4-5 meeting tonight, but most of my posts look negative because I usually post to get an answer to a relatively small issue that is nagging me at the time like the stock mirrors or grips (both already replaced at very low cost). Riding almost every day and reporting briefly on it would give a much rosier picture of my Buell satisfaction. I think several friends would seriously consider a Buell now if they bought a new bike where they wouldn't have before I showed mine off. Might hog up too much BWB bandwidth though.
Sorry, guess this should have been in "suggestions" but this thread made me think about it.

Buy a pocket mirror. Go ride several bikes. Look at your face after each ride. whichever one makes your smile the biggest, buy it. You are not buying something essential, like diapers for your kid, it's a (practical) toy. Somethings require massive analysis, this isn't one of them.
After too many years of analyzing the fun out of just about everything my advice...quit it. We go to get my wife a car she goes ooh red, ohh leather, oooh smells good. We buy it, she's ecstatic forever. I go to buy a car languish over every detail wear myself out; am eternally not ecstatic about my purchase; but am glad the ordeal is over. Three years later neither is worth much. who would you rather be????

So you've been hooked,

Have the withdrawl DT's started yet?

Are you dying for your next Buell riding fix?

Do you think about riding in the morning?

Do you ride alone?

These are signs of addiction, the only known cure is buying, and riding, a Buell.

We warned you.......

Welcome to the family.

Ride, My 03 has pissed me off a couple of times but I still love her in the twisties.

It is just to much fun running with the liter bikes in the twisties.

With the 06 belt I am sure it is going to run sweet for a long time.

Just a word of advice.... If you dont know how to twist a wrench learn. You will save thousands of dollars over the life of the bike being able to do basic stuff yourself.

Good luck!

I don't think you are going to have to baby the Buell.............. Get anything later than an 03 and the belt is fine.

I wring the hell out of my motor it is very tough! 4000 to 5700 is my normal rpm riding range. I am actually quite impressed with the motors durability.

Enjoy!

As far as reliability goes...

odo

55,105 miles if you can't read it. All on the original engine (It's about 200 miles short due to a speedo sensor failure), no mods except factory race kit, and I run standard motor oil. I'll probably be switching to syn3 next change though.

After 55K miles why even bother switching to syn. Standard oil is obviously working for you.

On a side note, I got home from a nice ride after getting my tps done (race kit) this morning & I still havn't encountered any problems.

Except maybe one. It seems my social life is dying. I keep thinking the bike will break down & while it's in the shop for weeks or months I can use that time to reforge old friendships but my bike is not cooperating. It just keeps going & going. So I think my social life is forfeit.

People see me & literaly duck to avoid me because all I can talk about is my bike. It's been that way since the day I brought her home.

But I'm not addicted. No Sir not me. I can stop riding her any time I want. In fact I could stop right now...no problem...piece of c.... Arrrrrrgh. Ok I can't stop. I'm addicted big time.

Ride365, Save yourself! Step away from that Buell before it's too late. Once you bring one home it's all over. You'll spend the rest of your days with a really goofy looking grin on your face. You'll bore all your non riding buddies to death cause all you'll want to talk about is your bike. You'll start flaking on appointments & such because you've discovered a new road to explore. Your girlfriend/wife will hate you because you won't remember birthdays or such but you'll remember the exact date & time your bike got it's last service.

It's not too late. Run away Forrest! Run away!!

Or you can give into the dark side & enjoy the insanity just like us

This thread has become my lifeblood whenever I feel myself still 'considering' getting the Buell, I say 'considering' because the rest of the time I'm spending figuring out the finances, mods I want to do, etc. already haven "given into the dark side" (Metalstorm) hahahah! I have the SCG by the way..I think you were asking about it earlier... how tall are you?

I had a city cross, and while I actually liked the ride better, it was just too tall...but the 12's power is outstanding and i'm not shifting nearly as often.

Dude you just described exactly how I feel lately. Once I test rode a Uly I finally realized its not about what is on paper it is the whole. And you cant even guess what that whole is until you ride it. I brought my buddy with me to test ride a Buell cause he had never ridden one and I have been drooling over a Buell since I started a new job. I rode the Uly cause they didnt have a S to ride. Funny I came back in love with the bike I was riding just so my buddy was not alone. Ahhh Fate.

I'm 5'11" and the 12s fits real nice... I'm now just waiting until I move into my new apartment in august and seal the deal on this new job beginning of august until I buy my Buell... I've never in my life done as much research on something before I bought it as I have for the Buell, so I'm feelin pretty good about it... Besides the fact that I love the way it looks and absolutely loved the ride, I still needed to dot the I's and cross the T's, it feels good! Thanks again to all you folks for your input!
