I checked the engine oil this morning, after the bike had been stood all night..it was down to the minimum..so I put in a pint to bring the level up..started the engine and let it warm up...took the dipstick out to check it and oil gushed out (engine off). I've put in a pint before when it was down to the bottom mark. When I take the dipstick out now (engine cold), it is level with the top of the threads. Is it ok to run it like this with it being a dry sump ? Mike | ||

I would think it's ok. More oil the better... The engine will suck in the oil that it needs so it doesn't matter. | ||

Always check the oil after running the engine and with the oil still hot. | ||

Yep. Check oil at operating temp on level ground but with bike resting on it's kick stand. | ||

I would pull it out with a turkey baster or something similar. You need to leave some air space for expansion when the engine heats. It will also totally oil down your air filter and AIT sensor because it is headed that way. | ||

I'v been running the oil level just below the threads since about 400 miles. It now has 2000 on it and seems to be ok. The xtra oil helps if you ride a lot of wheelies. | ||

If it's really not a problem to run it with "too much" oil, then why is the manual so forceful in its language to make sure it's not overfilled?? | ||

Too little oil - bad Too much oil - very bad Synthetics will find their way out of the engine any way they can, and overfilling is a one-way ticket to Oil Leak City. I've run my Firebolt on the lower mark from day one; no leaks, no problems. |
