My 2005 XB9SX is in the shop for the second time in a year, and 6000 miles to get a leaky cam seal replaced. Oil is barfing out the ignition cover. Anybody else had, or heard of this? I am very concerned that it is an indication of a more serious problem. Dealer is great at replacing the seals under warranty...but, I want to fix the cause! Thanks for any help. |

When I had my XB9R a very similar problem arose. First they said it was just a seal and it was quickly replaced. Cranked about another 3K on the bike and had a warped/cracked head. Had to fight fiercely with the dealer to get them to fix it. Only hope for your sake that it's not the same deal...hence why I don't own anything harley/buell and will never buy one again. Good luck |

Roadrash1, I would check the run out on the cam shaft. Make sure the cam is true. If there is significant run out it is going to keep eating seals. It is hard to believe it is out because it is so short and one piece unlike the crank. It could be the bearing that is run out. If so that is not that difficult to fix. If you don't have a dial indicator you might skip that idea because it could be as simple as the shaft not being lubricated prior to the seal installation. If you put a new seal in w/o lubricating the shaft it will burn up the first 10 seconds of engine operation. |

I had this problem. It wasn't the seal. I must have replaced it about 5 times. It was a porous casting. Rare, but it does happen. It was replaced free by Buell even though the bike was out of warranty. I would have your dealer check with Buell Customer Service on this item. In the meanwhile, you might want to try a James double lip gasket, I think the part number is 1121DL as a last resort. Of course lubing the gasket is a must as Davo points out. |

Thanks to all for the input! According to the tech, there was a burr on the camshaft surface. He said he "smoothed it out". I am glad to be back on the road so quickly, but also happy I am still under warranty for another year. If nothing else goes wrong, I am still leaning towards buying the extended warranty. I love the bike, it is my second Buell. I also had an M2. That being said, I had a few Asian sportbikes, and never had one single maintenance item ever on any of them. Just change the oil, and lube the chain. I want to believe the XB is reliable, but I think it only depends on what you compare it too. -roadrash1- |
