If I switch to the XB9 primary gear in my XB12 Do I need to change the primary chain as well, or is there enough adjustment in the XB12 Chain? |

I think you need the chain as well. I just looked at the Trojan website, and the kit comes with a gasket, sprocket, and a chain. I wouldn't think the kit would come with a chain if you didn't need to change it out.

yes, the front engine sprocket and chain from the nine are used together, bolt on wheelies. just what ya want,11% more torque in each gear. careful now. |

I've done this mod and highly recommend it. The only down side for some people is that top speed will drop to about 203kph (126mph) at peak revs (basically, about the same top speed as a stock 9) - but on the plus side - there is WAY more grunt. I think for street riding the modified gearing is perfect - but for track days you'd be down on speed (but then again, an XB is always going to be at a disadvantage on a track compared to other sportbikes). Contrary to popular belief, it does not turn the bike into a wheelie monster (at least not an XB12R anyway). It does however make it possible to hoist the front wheel in 2nd gear without the need for clutching - you still need to tug the bars however. No need to get the Trojan kit btw. Just order the stock 9 engine sprocket and chain and a 12 primary cover gasket (the 9 and 12 are different). (Message edited by lenb on June 22, 2006) |

Thanks again guy's. I am looking for a little more in the bottom. Not worried about the top speed. Need more grunt for circle wheelies. Wants to stall out now. |

do you have a chain final drive? Might be a good idea and cheaper and cleaner to change gearing than messing with the primary drive. |

Or one might change both primary AND secondary, as I have done on my XB12Src I have the nine primary, and I selected a final ratio on my chain drive that split the difference between the nine and the twelve. Final drive ratio is 46/20 = 2.3 I figure a top speed at 6800 rpm of 130. I find the performance on the street to be gratifying, as I am a bit overweight, (235# in gear), and disinclined to ride at much over the ton. ( Don't mind getting there in a hurry, however:-). |

umm, not sure exactly what '9's you've ridden, but mine ( DEAD stock '06 XB9Sx) has been well over that - more than far enough 'over' to compensate for any speedo errors, I might add. I owned an XB9R and have ridden my friend's XB9S. My XB9R couldn't exceed 205kph stock and maybe did 210kph with a racekit. With a REALLY LONG straight it might have been able to touch 215kph (indicated) with the racekit. The wind blast stopped me from trying to see how fast my friend's XB9S would go -but it would surely be slower than an R. (Message edited by lenb on June 23, 2006) |
