I know I should get a manual but before that I want to change my oil since I just got the bike used. My questions are how much oil does it hold with filter replacement? do you recommend a harley/Buell filter? what grade oil do you recommend? And how many miles is tranny oil good for, mine only has 1600 miles. And is there anything I need to be careful of when doing this? Other than obviously stripping the oil drain plug. | ||

2.5 quart in the motor 1 quart primary use a L14476 purolator to save some cash. I usually change both of mine at 2000 miles | ||

Approx. 2.5 quarts w/filter. Buell filter 638006-00 or equivalent. 20W-50 synthetic is best after break in. Change fluids at least every 5000 miles, more often in the desert or severe use. | ||

I see a lot of posts about using the same synthetic in the motor and tranny but my 2006 Manual is somewhat specific about using the H/D FORMULA+ synthetic and not Mobil 1 or the like in the tranny or there could be clutch problems. This may be something to do with the changes for 06? The dealer appears to have used it for my 1000 mile service although it doesn't look like they used synthetic motor oil...I'l fix that next change. | ||

I use Ams oil MCV 20w-50 in both holes with no clutch problems. The type and brand of oil can be a very sensitive issue. I am just posting my experience with a syn oil in the tranny. I am at 5k and I am on my 4th oil and tranny change and the third set of plugs. I love working on bikes! From this point I will change oils every 2000-2500 mi. depending on the season and the type of riding conditions. There are lots of oil options I would recommend looking at them all before making the switch. HD360 is great for break in, don't rush it. | ||

My 1000 mile service will be up in 70 miles. I went to Harley yesterday and bought a Buell oil filter and the Harley Syn3 for both oil and transmission. For 4qts and a oil filter it ran me $45 bucks total. I never thought I would paid that much for oil and a filter, but I never thought I would pay $3.50 for a gallon of gas either.  | ||

Bigbuell, Be very careful with the filler plugs. I would recommend less than half the torque required on the oil plug. Just use common sense. The manual indicates 29-34 ft-lbs. oooouch!!! Way too tight. The tranny/ primary plug is 14-30 ft-lbs. I use no more than 12-14 ft.-lbs. on either and I use loctite 565 thread sealant. Several guys have stuck to the manual and pulled the threads right out of the swing arm. | ||

Davo Thanks for the heads up on the tork of the plugs. I thought the manual tork spec was a little much. | ||

I agree with Davo, This has nothing to do with this post but some of these toque values on these machines are to high. I just jacked up the threads on the pinch bolt on my swing arm a month ago, my wrench was set to factory specs and stripped it! |
