Any thoughts on a loud chirping noise that is very noticeable when accelerating on my 06XB9SX? Fuel pump? Oil pump? Normal? Let me be clear that it is loud. I am bringing bike in tomorrow for 1000 mile service and would like to get some feedback here before I mention it to the service dept. Thanks!

is it possible one of your brakes are dragging on the rotor?

Diablo, Not Sure...but to clarify the sound, it is an occilating chirping sound and is only heard when applying throttle.

Does it sound like a bird in your airbox? Mine started to make chirping noise under part throttle acceleration at certain rpms. Havent had the time to chase it down yet.

The fuel pump oscillates, aprox. three times per crank rotation during static timing test. Are you sure it isn't a high pitched roar? Check your primary chain or put your head down to the left and see if the noise is from the left side of the bike. You also might be hearing the injectors but I have trouble hearing fireworks! At about 2700-3000 rpm with the engine floating you can hear a lot of valve train noise (high pitched chatter almost sound like slight pinging but it is to well timed. Pinging has a random rythem).

Jhanz, I hear the same thing on my 12R. It only does it when opening up the throttle.

Sounds like a loud, high-pitched metallic chirping, almost like a bearing being spun, which made me worry that it was the cams or something like that. It's not coming from the primary.

I thought it was just me.

maybe the belt? the motor does move a little due to torque when opening the throttle.
could this cause the belt to walk a little and maybe rub the side plate of the pulley?

Just a thought.

Mine does the same thing but only when wet. Definatly chirping and only under acceleration. Check your idler pully, make sure the surface is not tore up.

Like Tork mentioned, it is a metallic chirping sound and it's heard only on acceleration. It sounds like it is coming from the engine to me. Silly as it sounds, I am a musician and have very sensitive ears, so I tend to notice very subtle noises. This drives me crazy when I can't pinpoint what is causing it. I'm on my way to take the bike in for service, hopefully all will be fine.

Does it sound like it's from the rear? Or more towards the front?

From the motor, below the airbox somewhere. My idler pulley and belt look fine.

I thought about the engine movement, too, Brian, thinking maybe it's the isolators squeaking. But I think the noise is a little too shrill for rubber (although I suppose it could be the isolator bolts moving in their metal races). The motor shakes more at idle than when I'm gunning it but I don't hear the chirping.

Did you check the flux capacitor?

Sounds to me like the Spodrod had come away from the ganglepin. This sets up a secondary oscillation at the same frequency as siberian snow tigers' mating calls, so watch your back ;)

Tork- That's where my noise is coming from too. I let you know if I find anything. Keep me posted on what the dealer has to say about it.

Can't be the flux capacitor. I switched from platonium to uranium (get it real cheap from Iran)

Mine makes a noise like you described and i was wondering if it was a high pitch spark knock. Only does it when i throttle up, and not all the time. More so when its hot.

Could be a whistle by the butterfly.

I can definitely hear it at about 30 percent throttle when I roll it on (not whack it open) and it sucks air by the partially open butterfly.

Dunno, describing a sound is kinda tough.

Mine does it at very low throttle openings. I think it's when you have a tad bit of play in the throttle cables and the vacuum generated tries to open the plate just a hair, then it closes again and the next pulse pulls it open again.

I don't know that, but I do know that the lower I set my idle, the farther from idle it keeps doing it. It'll do it just off idle to a certain opening...

/EDIT - Sounds sort of like a cricket?

Slaughter- Thats kinda what I thought it might be. Basically the same conditions you described. I never really noticed it before and it hasn't had any adverse affects on performance. I was going to pull off the air filter and go for a ride around the block to pin point it.

I think M1 may have hit the nail on the head.
I recently installed traction grips. May have to tighten up the throttle cables.

I was told the chirp was from the floating
brake caliper.

Sounds like your primary chain tension could be too tight...have you recently adjusted? If primary is too tight you can experience a "whistling sound." could it be a whistle and not a chirp?

One of our Blasts makes that same effing sound. Crickets is probably the best description I've heard so far.

I gotta take the bike out and verify the conditions that bring it about - but I think one of them was that drive had to be engaged. That would seem to rule out stuff on the engine side. I'm not certain if that's really how it happened, though...

Not really... Mine only does it under just a bit of load and low throttle settings. If it's in neutral or I have the clutch pulled I don't think it does it.

Have you ruled out the possiblity of small amounts of air exiting a bodily oriface at an accelerated rate from the excitement rush? (sometimes refered to as the "pucker factor")

Mcgiver, Belt lube? Is that like light bulb grease? Or is it something that may help out with belt longevity?

Its called polylube, I think, H.D. sells it , reduces friction belt to pulley. Should make belt and pulleys last longer. Been using it for years, still on same tube. Brian

I heard a sound like that right before the case cracked next to the output pully. The 5th gear bearing let loose and over stressed the front pully. By the time the bike stopped the tranny was also toast.

The first service was done and I'm picking the bike up from the dealer Monday. The service manager said that the sound was the idler pulley and that it is normal. Any thoughts?

PLACING TONGUE FIRMLY IN CHEEK:

I can't believe this thread has gone 6 days without someone stating that the squeaking/squealing noise was coming from the rear tire spinning on the pavement on acceleration

I picked the bike up from 1000 mile service today. The service manager said the chirping was the idler pulley (does that sound about right?) and that they would order the part and replace it under warranty. Otherwise, the bike is like butter after the service. I gave them Mobil 1 for the tranny and WHOA! very noticeable difference! Much smoother shifting and clutch disengagement. I will go synthetic in the engine after another 1000 miles or so.
