I did a bunch of things to the bike this weekend. Replacing the stock single 1157 brake/tail lamp with an LED cluster and adding a brake light modulator was one of the most fruitful things I did and would make a quick and easy $100 beginner's project. I took off the seats and tail section, cut 2 wires, put in 3 crimp-on connectors, and attached the box with a velcro strip inside the tool tray. It should take no more than 30 minutes for anybody to do.
The cluster is incredibly bright. I have seen objections to LED brake/tail lamp replacements, mostly due to diminished light off-axis. This is true of this one too, but it's way brighter off axis than the original 1157, and blazing bright to the driver behind me, which is what it's all about. A complete review of this cluster can be found at http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/led/led.htm and the product page is at http://www.customdynamics.com/motorcycle_led_bulbs.htm#Radiantz_LED_Clusters_
The modulator is a peach. It's made for LED brake lights. So far as I know, LED and regular brake light modulators aren't interchangeable. It can either flash three times and go constant; flash three times, stay on for a while, then repeat; strobe a bunch of times in three clusters of strobes and go constant (my pick); or strobe three clusters of blinks, stay on for a while, and repeat. If this doesn't get the attention of the driver behind you, he's gonna get you anyway because he's dead behind the wheel. Nice, how many miles do you have on this set-up? Just wondering about durability. Also not sure about the legality of the brake light strobe in all states. Thanks! BDWD......... I put it in today. I'm not sure of legality either. From what I've heard, it's all about whether you annoy the law, and what appears to annoy them is constant blinking sitting at the light, as opposed to initial blinking when first hitting the brakes. There are a few schemes out there to offer blinking patterns that aren't constant. Some put delays between blink sequences. I like this scheme (3 bursts of 1/2 second with 1/2 second space following each burst, then constant on). So if I see someone hauling up behind me too fast, I can hit the brake lever a second time to initiate more flashing. Remember the Cyberlight? The frequency of flashes went up depending on how hard you hit the brakes. Kewl idea, but I guess it went away. (Message edited by kurosawa on May 29, 2006) |
