I know the motor is basically the same, but are there any real significant differences in the handling characteristics of the SS as opposed to the S? Has anyone who has rode both been able to give a realistic comparison between the 2? |

Stretch, I have ridden both this week on the same road. I can tell you my "S" with the Corbin seat has more leg room than the "Ss". It seems the cutouts are more pronounced on the Lightning than the Long. My knees dug into the frame of the Ss immediately, and I did not find the extra room I was told would be there. Stock bike to stock bike there may be a difference but I did not find enoughj comfort to sway my payment. I could not differentiate between the ride characteristics enough to justify the new ride. The clutch is nicer and the tranny is a bit smoother. Overall I am happy to have what I have and I would suggest getting a pipe on yours and ordering the Corbin or Select seat. I also have a CRG clutch lever that makes a world of difference. For reference I am 6'3" and 185lb. I know you have a little "stretch" to your frame too. I have the renthal "ultra-low" bars from Al @ American Sport Bike and they have given my arms a little room to breathe as well. I would say stick with you're lightning. The only real change in comfort would come should you get a ride on a Ulysses. Now that bike was made for us. NUTS |

I gotta jump in here. I have the Ss, I have ridden the XB9S. I happen to think the regular S is still kinda short. Not to mention, the seat on the Ss is like butta. (Message edited by cochise on April 29, 2006) |

I am 6'2" and I just test rode a SS. I also felt MORE room on the regular S. The Steering felt heavy as well. That being said. The new tranny's are way better and he's right about the seat - Nice. That orange color looks a lot nicer in the daylight as well. |

It was the xb12s that I was originally looking at. I had taken several test rides and was only waiting for the money to fall right. Then the xb12ss came out. I rode it but felt better on the xb12s. Just before I made the deal on the xb12s, my friend and salesman made me ride both for 20 minutes. That is when I noticed the increased comfort on the SS, which is the one I ended up buying. I also noticed it felt more stable on the highway. Maybe it doesn't handle as well in the back twisties as the xb12s, but it still out-handles most other bikes. I would have to recommend an extended test ride on both before forming your own opinions. |
