Get a Factory Motors Manual and a Parts Book for your year and model ...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOUR CAM SENSOR ???

When you set you timing have it just comming into the rear of the timing
hole ... This will be fast, so always run max. high test gas from then on ...

the xb's already have detonation problems as is, would it be wise to advance the ignition timing more?

Jkhawaii:

IMHO "DETONATION" in the XB happens in two
ways:
The engine is covered too much by the FRAME(run the fan all the time) and when you lug a hot engine(do not lug the engine as in keep the RPM's between 2500 and 3000 RPM) ...

EVER NOTICE THAT WHEN YOU TURN OFF YOUR XB THE FAN IS ALREADY RUNNING !!!

Being an AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN you already know that running the timing too late will cause the
engine to run hot ...

I don't recommend advancing the timing. It could cause detonation and would cause hard starting when hot. Leave it as it comes. It's not a race motor.

how much lower engine temperatures have you recorded by advancing the timing?

Jkhawaii:

Have a 97S3T and had my timing set to run the best on a DYNO ... When "i" got it home
"i" checked it by the STATICING TIMING setting and it was just coming into the rear of the timing plug hole ...

Have been running it this way for years and
it has 89K on it now as of the last ride ...

The TOP END has never been off !!!

"i" do run Syn3 in the engine/transmission as it does run cooler with this oil ...

Have a cooling fan on it which does not come on untill after a few minutes when "i"
stop ... It only comes on when riding if "i" get stuck in heavy traffic which is not too often ...
