I was out riding yesterday and the drive belt broke on my 03 XB9s, bummer. I bought the bike in August of 04 it has 8K miles. Does anyone know if the belt is covered under warranty or is under recall? I know the 03 had some belt issues. Also how hard is it to put on? | ||

There is an updated belt for the '03 XB models that is supposed to be improved over the stock one. It is not under recall so far as I know although there was a notice on the handling of the belt (which is good advice for any belt really). However I had a stock belt originally and I may have been lucky as I got nearly 18,000 miles on it before I decided to just replace it. I decided to get the upgrade kit from American Sport Bike which changes both pulley's and includes the latest '06 belt. The belt is much MUCH beefier than the original and updated '03 belts and I feel much better about riding around with this belt. For just under $400 you get both pulleys, the belt, and the mounting bolts for the back pulley which I felt was a really good deal. But...if you want the easiest option that would be just change the belt. Make sure you put the swingarm brace back on (the part the bolts on opposite the oil dipstick side) and torque it down before you apply any serious tension on the new belt or the swingarm might get tweaked. Also suggest using anti-seize on the bolts too while you are at it... Once I had both pulleys replaced it took me about 45 minutes to replace the belt...but I take my time. | ||

I second the anti-seize, especially on the axle threads and on the other end where the pinch bolt is. | ||
