Not here in hell (L.A.). The plus side: lots o' sun, curvy roads, beaches, mountains, near perfect weather. The minus side: people, loads and loads of people and none of whom know how to f****** drive. The problem with paradise is everyone wants it, though these days I'd doubt anyone would claim Los Angeles as "paradise". | ||

Tis finally nice here in Upstate NY. Lots of Sun, Over 70. And supposed to be above 50 till at least midnight. Going to be a great night to ride. We don't have as much sun as hell, but our Idiot Driver Factor is lower, but the kamakizee deer and Squirrels we got kinda make up for it. | ||

Here in New Mexico (cleaner than the old Mexico, but not by much) we have basically had no precip since November. Yeah, nice for riding but the worst drought in recorded history. The farmers/ranchers around here have about had it. | ||

It was not paradise then, and it has not been paradise at any time in the intervening years. The trouble with California is that they have let anybody in and for too long. It is beyond repair. The only regrets that I have are is that the values of the real estate has steadily increased ever since. It defies logic, no one can afford to live where they grew up. Jack | ||

Jackbequick, I couldn't agree with you more. Unless you have lots of $$$, you rent. L.A. has become a cesspool and I'm almost swirling the drain. My wife has had her eye on Maine for two years. It's got to be better than this: two different nationality immigrants arguing who speaks better English. | ||

$200,000 will buy you a cardboard box behind a nice house in San Diego. It is thoroughly ridiculous. My in-laws house, built in the 40's. Crackerbox tract house, 3 br 2 ba, 1 car garage on a corner lot. The neighbors house just sold for over $600,000. This is with aluminum wiring that won't support A/C etc without a complete re-wire to bring it up to current code. All because it is locate In North Clairemont (about 1/2 mile south of La Jolla) and 2 mi or so from the beach. JBQ's assessment of the people and conditions is very accurate. I left Kalifornia for Maine because I had two sons in this area. It was inevitable that I would move to somewhere from a place I loved, Sonoma, CA. That was my last CA home, I was 15 years in residence there. Maine is sort of heaven and hellish. But I like it very much. Highest personal taxes in the U.S., beautiful geography, fairly conservative citizens, friendly. The hillbilly mentality and people who appear to suffer from gene pool deficiencies can be a challenge. But overall, I'd say that if you are open and friendly you'll be repaid in kind. Winter is different, it is beautiful and you have to learn to get out in it and get some sun and exercise or it can be a mental burden and lead to some bad habits overwhelming you. I'm retired and have no employment experience or problems here. But trade for trade you'll make less but can afford to own a home and live as well as you do there in CA. Maybe better. As a retired military guy who grew up as the son of a military guy I can live anywhere if I like it and can make ends meet on my pension and SS. My advice to anyone in CA or other high cost areas is to buy a home if you are going to be there another five years. Even if it seems a crushing burden at the time you buy. The home I bought in CA in 1986 appreciated about 350% in 15 years. Letting that equity build and then "taking the money and running" gave me housing security (unless I do something really stupid) for the remaining years. If you pi$$ away the equity/appreciation you can get from real estate on cars, bikes, and other toys, you are throwing away the only long term financial security that politicians have not stolen from working class Americans. But they have tried to steal it several times and they will try again. Upstate and Western New York, Vermont, New Hampsire, Pennsylvania, there are some very civilized, beautiful places where you can both grow up and live out here. I know why guys like Tramp can't stay away now, five years ago it would not have made sense to me. Jack | ||

Normal Service resumed in Ireland - 2degrees C. for my XB9r trip to Bishopscourt at 5am this morning for the Temple 100 races. It was so cold and windy at the track the tyre warmers couldn't heat the tyres in fact we ended up using one to soften the butter so that we could make sandwiches! The trip home?..........110 miles in the pi$$ing rain....I reckon Summer was last Tuesday. Anyone know of a nice place to rent in So.Cal.? (Message edited by Surveyor on April 22, 2006) | ||

Ya the weather here in KC sucks also, it is 85 out not a cloud in the sky with a really light breeze. Just got done with a 200 mile ride.  |
