I bought an XB12S this month and so far love it. My last bike was an old yamaha that couldn't get out of it's own way. Anyway, I am afraid to accelerate too fast on this bike because I don't want the front wheel to come up and flip me off... am I being paranoid? Does the front wheel come up very easily on an XB12? I am new to riding this type of bike so I don't want to F up too soon.

You can twist the throttle on my 12R pretty hard in any gear and not worry about the front coming up on you. I was playing around in first gear about a week ago on a flat stretch to see where wheelie action that I have always heard about is. In first gear start rolling around 2500-3500 rpm, back off the throttle and then crack it open and all of a sudden you will be airborne. Easy.

When you get used to your bike, you do not even need to look at the TACHOMETER, as you will be able to feel when the TORQUE is there to wheelie ...

In my experience on my XB12R, around 18 mph in first gear is perfect. You really don't need to worry, but at the same time the front end WILL come up pretty quickly if you crack the throttle hard. Take your time and you will get used to it. Just remember to always cover the rear brake with your foot . . . just in case!

Is there a lot of time before the front wheel comes up and before it goes so far it flips you on your butt? What about 2nd and 3rd gears... will the bike wheelie by hitting the throttle? thanks guys, i dont mean to sound like a newbie dork but i am haha.

Let it come with time as you get used to the bike. This sounds like something waiting in the weeds to raise all of out insurance rates when the insurance company totals your bike. Believe me, I in no way am trying to be a prick or be the preacher man, IN NO WAY. I have found myself in the dirt a few times listening to directions from another rider as to how to do things like this. I just ripped the back fender off of my KTM about a month ago riding a LONG wheelie and I have been racing the same bike for 2 years now (I know it well) and it still happened. A street bike is a VERY EXPENSIVE fix if it hits the ground at anything other than a fall in your driveway. I guess what I am trying to say here without sounding like someones dad, is these things are something you "feel". In the mean time, I stand in awe everytime I see one of those kids that have "mastered" it blast past me riding a stand up wheelie! Theres a reason the professional stunters bikes look like shit and have crash cages. But as a dumb ass waiting for everything I just said to catch up with me, I too must try on occasion!

Acab,

There is some time before it comes up but it all depends on how hard you hit the throttle. I have never been able to get it up in any gear other than 1st, at least without using my clutch. Like Rafartist said, just be careful and give it time! You will get the feel for it

*** Just don't pop the clutch and give it gas at the same time. then you be fine.

I learned that really quick. OR , you can just put more body weight towards the front and then goose it, more then likely it will not pop up on you unless you are meaning to do it on purpose. : )

As mentioned above, it's all about how hard you whack the throttle open.

The power delivery is really smooth, so if you just roll it wide open the front end may start to come up, but it isn't likely to come up high enough to go over before hitting the rev limiter. If you snap the throttle hard in 1st it will come up really quick, and could certainly go over if you don't shut the throttle or stab the rear brake in time. In 2nd gear the bike doesn't have enough power to wheelie over without the clutch, so you can basically be as abrupt as you'd like the throttle. You may get it to come up by snapping the the throttle hard, but it isn't likely to go over.

Thanks guys, I am trying to actually NOT wheelie... I just want to start going faster and use more of the power in the bike, I am just paranoid about doing wheelies since I am not totally comfortable with the bike yet. Again, thanks for all the responses.

Its real cool when you take 1st all the way to the limit and bang 2nd hard and power wheelie all the way through the gear!

Cmm, I did that Saturday racing a 636!! It was fun. Totally blew the kids mind after sitting at a light and letting him hear it lope for a few seconds. Of course then a 1100 Blackbird came by and fed us both our lunches!
