I'vew had my xb now for 4 months and have already had the first service at five hundred miles. I just checked the oil and it's down some from the service. It has about 2300 miles on it now. Is this normal? I've heard that the ol harley motors like their oil but i thought it was when they got older. |

Air cooled motors due tend to eat more oil than liquid cooled motors. Small amounts of oil consumption are acceptable, just keep an eye on it from time to time. The best thing to do is check it after each ride, and top off as needed. This way you know the oil level is acceptable the next time you want to go for a ride, and you always want to check you oil at operating temperature. Hope this helps. Chris |

My 05 9sx has consumed oil since new as well, over 10k miles so far and no problems at all (and I mean *no* problems, not fouled plugs, no visible smoke, nothing). Generally, about every 3rd tank of gas, I have to top off the oil tank (go from the lower mark to the higher mark). Not a big deal. My plan is to make sure it is over 20k miles before I am out of warranty. If it can go that far like this with no other symptoms, how bad can it be? |

my buell seemed to use more oil when it was new than it does now. seems the more miles i get on it, the less oil it uses. i do periodicly(sp?) check it and top it off. but its usually a small amount needed. |

It's not just Buells. As mentioned above, air cooled engines use oil. It's just the way it is. Can't tell you how many BMW riders I know that carry a quart of oil on trips. Mine seems to use very little. Maybe a couple ounces in 1000 miles. It's burning less oil than any oil cooled bike I've owned. Well, actually, it might be equal to my old Kawasaki ZR7. That bike didn't burn much either. |

My 2003 xb9s burned quite abit of oil in the first 2000-3000 miles. Now it has 15,000+ and there is no noticable oil consumption. I never need to top off between oil changes anymore. |
