I changed my primary oil recently and found a "c" shaped piece of primary chain on the drain plug magnet. I have since beaten on the bike at Pocono and it has held up. I have no idea when the link broke, so I may have been riding like this for quite some time. 1) has anyone else found a piece of primary chain in thier oil? 2) If so, did they just keep running it? 3) Can chain failure cause any damage to the cases, sprockets, clutch, covers, etc.? I'll be on the road for the next two days, so I will not be able to respond to this thread until I return. Thanks guys. I always appreciate the help I get here. |

Preventative service is always better then waiting on a broken part to fail. |

Spatten1: If peices are fallig off the PRIMARY CHAIN you need to replace it ... If the PRIMARY CHAIN has worn into the PLASTIC of the adjustment SHOE ASM. which indicates the PRIMARY CHAIN has been run TOO TIGHT and will cause it to fall apart ... 3/4 inch on the tight spot, cold, "PERIOD" !!! |

If your chain is spitting off pieces, I recommend that you replace it immediately. The ragged end of a broken chain flailing around inside your primary probably would chew some grooves in the metal, but I doubt the damage would be fatal. But when it lets go completely, you could be looking at damage to your stator and the gears on the starter and clutch basket, plus a long walk home. rt |

I've found plenty of metal shavings on the drain plug magnet, but no recognizable pieces of anything. If I were you I'd pull the outer primary cover to see the damage. I'd venture to guess that whatever caused a piece of the chain to break hasn't fixed itself and is a bigger problem waiting to happen. I haven't seen a primary chain break completely, but I'm guessing it won't be pretty. Even if the chain managed not to get hung up on the crank sprocket or the clutch hub I'd be worried about the remaining pieces of chain stirring around in the tranny. For the cost of the primary gasket and a quart of fluid it's definitely worth pulling the cover to check it out. |

Consider the piece a sign and an opportunity to replace your chain and not the trans. |

How much does it cost to replace a set of cases? If your primary chain breaks, you're going to find out. It won't be cheap. |

The primary case is a little over $200. I'm with everyone else on this one. Could you imagine going around a turn, hitting the apex, and getting on the gas, only to have the bike lock up? I can think of a million places that if that happened you would be up shit creek without a paddle. |
