I hear a rattle-tapping noise coming from the primary case right where it meets the jugs. I was at the dealer today to buy a fabric air box cover and figured I would have them look at it to see if it was a "normal" noise or if it might be a primary chain too loose. The chain tension was good. I am thinking maybe it needs some oil, or some better oil. What do you guys think? I didn't notice this when I picked the bike up. New bike excitement can mask things you might not notice until you really start to ride the bike. The rattle follows the throttle and sounds like lifter noise except it is coming from the area around the bottom of the jugs and the top of the primary case. Any and all help-suggestions is appreciated. Thanks. |

Check the torque on the primary chain front sprocket nut. There is a new tighter spec published in dealer bulletins, and you may find it right here as well! Do it ASAP; if it is retightened soon there will be no further problem. |

Does it have kind of a "ring" to it? And does it stop when you load up the clutch just a little? Thats what my M2 sounded like it had that front sprocket Imonabus was talking about come loose. |

Will I need to bring in my 2006 X to get this done or does it only apply to older models? |

Just the older ones that have it happen to them. All 06+ models should be using it. |

The date on the advisory is September 16, 2005, well after many of the 2006 model bikes exited the factory. Maybe the folks at the factory can advise build date after which the new torques were implemented? Someone call and ask would ya? |

I had my primary retightend as per the new change right infront of me...I thought it would go away ... It didnt make a difference in my case. I think its just how it is. The motors knock/rattle, etc. The make all kinds of crazy sounds..They are Air colled and are just loud mechanically. One thing I have noticed is Buell motors are louder mechanicaly than a regular Harley motor though. I wouldnt worry about it too much. |

I have heard it described as a "box of rocks". Yep, those sounds are normal. |

I think its just how it is. you will know if that nut comes loose, not subtle at all. no way in hell it sounds right to have the bike running. its awful. luckily its an easy fix though! |

Not to punish anyone for giving us important information, but could somebody with first hand information render an opinion? If you had one from the right dates in the garage, would you pop the primary cover and retorque, or just leave it be until you were in there for some other reason or heard the thing start ringing? Understand this is not "should I go whining to my dealer for free work". This is "would you spend the 2 hours and $10 worth of primary fluid to make it a non problem? I have been kind of looking for an excuse to see the inside of my XB primary anyway... It feels wrong somehow to have 10k on the bike and not had to go in there for something or other |

depends how much you like to gamble Reepi.. . i was far, far away when my knock kicked in (nut came loose). man did it suck bad to ride it alllllll the way back home, not knowing what was wrong, ruining a beautiful ride, feeling like you are killing the motor, have the bike sit overnight while i waited for morning to call the dealership... rent a truck... haul it down... have it sit for a week... then have it re-torqued and still wonder alllll winter long if she'll be OK. (she is by the way) ask Dago too... i think we both would say... re-torque that puppy and put your mind at ease. who knows if it will be just fine but that bulletin didn't pop up for no reason. they come loose. |

I don't know about your particular bike but there does seem to be a rash of problems with the timing being set incorrectly. I tried to ignore it last summer and the cold weather helped as cold will retard and heat will advance the timing slightly. But now I have scheduled service as both the Buell XB owners at the dealer said theirs was set incorrectly. It seems the HD builders haven't quite figured out there is a difference in their HOGS and our Buells. |

Could you elaborate on the 'ringing'? I noticed that as I ride next to a curb or something 'reflective' I can hear a very small ringing/squealing/ears are ringing sort of sound under cruising loads neither gaining or losing speed. Actually if I let off the gas, it will stop the noise. If I resume that cruise again it will start. Is this something to be concerned about? Second, I notice the little tool in the picture to lock the sprockets in unison. Is there a homemade variation of that tool you may know about, or would I be better off to go buy the part? |

Is it just me or are most all the reports of actual loose nuts coming from XB12's? Bill, I think the XB9 is not much of a risk. |
