I have an 04 12R with 3500 miles on it, and after riding about 150 miles at high speeds (100-125 mph) I ended up on some slow speed country roads with turns and 2nd through 4th gear changes. While accelerating through the gears the tranny jumped to a lower gear startling the •••• out of me! It happened twice, and then the ride home 150 miles back nada? Well, one week later it happened again while going through the gears revving it out. I had a rear tire change recently and thought maybe the belt wasn't properly tensioned? I am not mechanically inclined, so it was a stab at best. Anyone? | ||

It's dropping in to lower gears? I've never heard of that happenning. I've heard of bikes dropping in to nuetral before, but never in to lower gears. Take it to a dealership. | ||

Did it "pop" out immediately after changing gears? If so perhaps you hadn't properly shifted to begin with.. | ||

check the primary chain tension maybe its jumping around | ||

Mine has done that but I blame it on incomplete shifts, it has also poped in between gears from incomplete shifts. | ||

My first impression was also an incomplete shift, but after the initial jump from 4th to 3rd I was more conscious of the shifts being firm to see if that was the case. Chance it was the tire change? The bozos who did it (The supposed worlds largest Harley store in Pompano) have been nothing but problems including damaging the sidewalls of the rim. Belt tension the answer? | ||

Mine was doing the same thing. Took it in and they had to replace a spring on the shifter behind the primary chain cover.  They said the spring falls off on these bikes although I don't know of it happening to anyone else. | ||

Not the best tension, it's not adjustable. Could be the spring or a mis-adjusted primary chain among other things. If it is a problem, get it checked. | ||

Is this covered under warranty? With 3500 miles on it I would hope that a problem like this would be checked out for free (haha) I had my rear tire replaced at the above mentioned Hardley dealer (the new dunlop 208) and it set me back 272 big ones. I went to a Honda dealer and they charged 165 installed for the same tire. | ||

Truk, I shifted and there was about a 4-5 second interval before it jumped | ||

Check to see if there is a small amount of play in the shifter shaft (inboard and outboard, between the LH crankcase and the primary cover). I had one where once things warmed up, the shifter shaft would bind and not allow the shift mechanism to return fully to the "neutral" position. |
