Does anyone have pics of an American Sportbike Open Airbox Kit installed? Am I correct in stating that if I had one installed on my XB9SX, that I would be able to see the filter through the Translucent Airbox Cover?

you are correct....don't have a pic of mine but if you have a translucent cover you will see the filter....

Who was it that had made a clear open air box? it look sweet if you had that with a Translucent Airbox Cover.

The website says it assumes the muffler servo has been removed from the bike. Does the Buell Race Kit do this, or do you have to use a Drummer or some other aftermarket muffler?

I'm asking because I like the fact the the Buell kit is a better sound, but not necessarily that much louder than the stock.

Can anyone explain to me how this set up flows more air? Al, if I ran this set up without a catch can this summer, would I get an oily film on the inside of my airbox cover?

I think the assumption that the servo is gone is because if you don't remove it the thing will be sitting on top of your nice clean kit that opened your airbox. I have a Jardine and the open airbox kit, but I don't have the Race ECM or directlink, so my servo is still sitting on top of my kit. I have a red 12r though, so you can't see it. Once I get the directlink I'll go ahead and get rid of the servo.

As for the how does this help question, it opens up the available space under the outer lid from which to pull air from. Sort of like putting the 12 airbox on a 9, except you are just taking the airbox out all together. If you have the outer cover cut or one of the newer bikes it gives you a cold air induction effect. Someone else may be better at explaining this.

your profile says that you have a XB9SX, the servo is only on the XB12 models, so you have nothing to worry about.

But to answer your question, yes the Buell race kit does not use the servo.

Eric,
The open air box kit does two things.

One, it provides the fiberglass cap and the hold down HW for the air filter so that the air can access the air filter from all sides. The air on the 05 and previous bikes has a difficult time reaching the right side of the filter. The air on the 06 bikes has a difficult time reaching the left side of the filter. This cap lets the entire filter come into play, and lets the air coming from the perimeter of the cosmetic air box cover have a straight shot.

The second thing the kit does is route the breathers out. The breather hoses enter the airbox through two holes in the airbox floor. I use those two holes as the hold-down points for the air filter cap so that no drilling is required. The kit provides the hoses, Tee, and instructions to route those lines, but not the terminus for the line. A breather filter is all that is required, but a catch can is a little more sano.

"sano" I haven't heard that since I used to read every word of every motocross magazine printed. My hero was Hurricane Hannah, and John O' was just coming up through 125's.

I was like the christmas story kid and inhaled it all, especially those hot 80cc "shootouts".

I always thought it meant trick, neat, cool, useful. Is it actually even a word? I googled it to no avail -

Sanitary - clean installation. We did our best to follow this credo when installing those add-on casette decks and 6x9 speakers (fabled Jensen triaxials!) back in late 1970s high school.

Trying to follow that same philosophy with Buell mods. The XB's kinda hot roddish to me, all-American metal (with parts sourced from the world's best OEMs, of course).

Al - your Open Airbox kit is truly "sano", a must-have to complement the CityX plastics I traded for. Will call with my order soon! Thanks for your innovation.

So Al,
I just ordered up your open airbox conversion along with some other stuff... What's all this talk about reprogramming a stock ECM? Could I send you the ECM from my Uly to help it out at at lower RPM? Also, would this reprogramming be done differently if the Uly were wearing different exhausts? In other words, would you program the ECM one way if I were sporting the stock exhaust, another for a Drummer exhaust, and yet differently for the Micron? Maybe I should PM you so I can get ALL the necessary parts ordered and shipped at one time?
