Back when I had my FZR there was someone who came up with a gear indicator that worked off the neutral switch position sensor. I was curious if such a device could be made to work with the Buell's? If maybe one of our sponsers could come up with a device that would work maybe? To top it off he also had one that had a sensor that would automaticly lighten it for visability in the day and darker so it doesn't blind you at night. I'm digging on the FZR site I use be on to see if I can find a link to the info on it again. |

Aha, found the link to the site. http://www.ledgear.co.uk/ I don't know if you can view this page or not, but it's a run down of the install. http://www.fzrarchives.com/ipb/index.php?showtopic=9524&hl= Maybe someone could answer if they think that this would work with our bikes that or one of the sponsers could pick this one up and reverse engineer it maybe? Reason why I'm interested in this is because I would reeeeally like to have one and this is the most practical design. |

Have you ever seen the Acumen Datatool gear indicator? It should be pretty universal and they have dealers here in the USA. They should be competitively priced. I have a gear indicator on my set-up, but it was part of my shifter so it was expensive. It is made by Translogic in the UK. They could have stand alone systems as well. |

Seems most of the aftermarket ones use the tach and speedo to calculate where the gear is at. I'm not to fond of those types. Reason being why I'm bringing this one to peoples attention |

Thats cool. Honda had a similar system on my old v45 saber(vf750s) and I think on my vf1000f interceptor. It worked just fine. I guess the reason you don't see more of them is the added cost in manufacturing. They sure aren't that complex. The translogic does compare speed to tach impulses. I'm not sure about the datatool. |

The Acumen DG8 gear indicator is available with a plug and go loom to fit straight onto the XB series. We also now have the Motogadget Motoscope LED digital dash that has a gear indicator function built in. |

If the Acumen unit is plug and play for the XB series, as Trojan says, I'd be confident in buying and using one. If, however, you wish to purchase one of the universal models, and have to rely on the US distributor for assistance if/when it doesn't function immediately, do yourself a favor and put the money in the gas tank in stead. Without repeating the long-dranw out story, I'll just say the US distributor will happily take your money, but will be able to offer little technical support. |

Well, the one I posted about above works off the Neutral sensor position switch on the FZR and doesn't rely on the tach and speedo to calculate what gear it's in. That's why I'm interested in it. Trojan, the ones you pointed out. How do they work? Do they work off the speedo and tach or in another manner? (Message edited by cataract2 on February 16, 2006) |

My acumen digital indicator has a flaw in determining the difference between 4th and 5th gear. I called acumen directly and had some great customer service, but they told me that the gear ratios between 4th and 5th were too similar for the acumen to be able to discern them easily. The indicator does eventually figure it out and I'm glad I have it. For me, though, (post install ) it works 90% perfect. I would NOT recommend it though. I got the plug and play, however the time on the road to get the indicator through "learn" mode required some rather dangerous driving in retrospect. On the plus side for me the plug and play loom that came with it has two output connections and I can add their digital shift light at any time. I put this in the thread because I would say that any gear indicator that functions based on calculations between tach and speedo CAN have flaws. |

Keys, big reason why I like the one I'm posting about. I think I'll try to work with this guy to see if it can work with our bikes. If so then I would ask any sponsor that would be interested in working with him to get sales going on it here to give me the ok to give him their e-mails. |
