Hi guys,

Well I haven't posted on here for a while, but still hope someone can give me an answer from experience... Sunday, just left my buddies place, was pulling onto a main street (a left).. and I see bright headlights in my peripheral vision... then BAM!... the bike spins around about 90degrees, I go off the right, the bike lands on the right side....and the guy takes off..

A couple guys going the opposite way stop to help, but nobody got a description...

Anyways, I'm alive, a little sore, bruised, rashed, blah, blah, blah....

Question time: if my bars hit the frame and dented it, should I just put frame pucks on and be done with it? Should I buy a new frame? or should I let the insurance company decide my fate.... Also, the swingarm has some road rash by the axle bolt, should I replace the axle?

And finally, should I be worried about anything mechanically from the fall? I started it up and it runs fine...

Thanks for all your advice...

Pete

I'd let ICBC look after it, thats why they get so much of our money. Why take a chance or ride a scabby looking bike after paying out 1k per year to them?

i dropped mine doing abt 40mph on some gravel last nov & hit a median & then got trapped by bike .. xb12r .. anyway .. had similar damage to yrs & the wrote it off totally .. i took some cash & salvage title & am fixing it ..

to be honest .. if they total it, do yrself a favor & take the $$ & get another bike .. its a wee little headache & i even ordered a bunch of parts (front right fork & triple clamps, for example) & the f**kers are the wrong parts .. #'s are diff slightly & fork is very differnt (i didn't have the original on me when i order, to compare to, u'd think it was all written down for them, but apparently not). the lower triple clamp don't fir either new or old fork .. looks the same, but its maybe a millimeter smaller ID ...

ack ..

be sensible tho ... so much subtle & hidden stuff gets damaged .. u'd really be surprised ..

it gets very costly.

Thanks again... I'm just still a little confused at what I want I guess... Just put new tires, belt, exhaust, etc. on it, and it runs great... On the other hand a 2006 is improved... And I even found a frame on eBay for 600... The bodywork is minor, and I was going to paint it next week anyway...

What to do...

Oh man, so glad you survived this. It's my only fear on the street, cars with idiots behind the wheel. I think I'd rebuild the bike, because it and you obviously have a real bond!

Probably want the insurance company to go over it from the sounds of what happens. Better safe than sorry.

First of all glad to hear you're okay.

If insurance will total the bike let 'em. I had a '04 Ultra classic rebuilt with $10k worth of damage. It doesn't track straight, has numerous rattles, etc.
Maybe you could buy back the salvage and have some spare parts...

You all are so quick to judge the driver, but why not judge the rider who pulled out in front of him? Maybe Baldy could draw us a diagram or something, but it sounds like he turned left in front of someone and caused the accident. I admit that I hate the guys guts for leaving the scene, but lets not be so quick to judge the car driver just because a bike got hit. Baldy, I am in no way trying to offend you. If my opinion is far enough off that it needs to be corrected, post a diagram explaining what the roads looked like and what happened.

First off, glad to hear you're OK.

This is a tough one. What Bake says is right--ICBC takes so much of our dough, they should pony up when the opportunity comes along.

However, you seem to have a bike you like (and have done some personal mods to)--if the damage is minimal, maybe let it slide.

Because, Jandj_davis has a point--riders always complain about car drivers claiming they didn't see us when they pull out in front, this almost sounds like the same (rider didn't see the car coming before pulling out in front). Like Jandj says, the car driver's an a-hole for not stopping--but if you get ICBC involved, they may decide you're at fault, which I believe allows them to disallow your claim, and may also hurt your driving record (affecting any insurance discounts you currently get). Check it out with a lawyer or friendly insurance/ICBC agent--I'm just spouting off the top of my head here.

Keep in mind, without a police report on the accident ICBC won't consider the accident even happened--did you ever contact the police?

More than likely some damage was done to the car. If Baldy was at fault why wouldnt the driver stop and collect?
Glad you're not to banged up. There's not to many bikes on the road this time of year so cagers arent thinking about them.
The annual spring motorcycle awareness program hasnt started yet.

Because the car driver panicked--might have thought he killed Baldy, might have been drunk (no way to tell now, of course), lots of reasons.

Did Baldy file a police report? If not, why?
