After skydiving, the best amusement park rides seem rather mundane. |

Bcord, Yes they have. Most smart pilots don't do that unless forced and then they have to do it very fast. At least that is the case for Hanggliders. Paragliders don't have that issue although some pilots still skip off across the ground. A large number of skydivers get hurt doing "hook turns" hot dogging into a D.Z. also.
The were two cliff in P.V. one at Point Fermin and one at point "A". The one at point Fermin was closed because an a hole killed himself and his family sued the city. The one at point "A" became the Ocean Trails golf course. I almost had a permanent flying site set up with them but some idiot pilots could not avoid being jerks and ruined it.
If one gets good at Paragliding it is a way better rush then falling out a plane. Did you miss the part about 70mph 5g spiral dives? I have been 10,000agl and been standing on the ground in a little over a minute. Barely able to stay concious during the descent. Not to mention entering and exiting a truly strong thermal.
I have several professional skydiving buddies and it would cost me ALOT less than most people to go play. I Just have zero intrest in 60 seconds of windy air. Heck, I never even felt like I was falling. I can get the same feeling sticking my head up at 120 on the bike.
I think that if they ever get the skydiveing wing perfected I may have to jump enough to get to play with that though. Ground comming up = boreing, Ground flashing by under you = RUSH!!!!!
Darn Santa Ana winds are ruining my play time!

Skyguy, I didn't miss your post. I think I will investigate the paragliding phenom around here. I have seen a few flying over the desert. In fact I have seen a paraglider flying in the BLM (Bureau of Land Manage property) almost in my backyard.
I am thinking the Glider Port near Lake Pleasant offers instruction. I could be wrong. What do you know about the Arizona paragliding? |

Skydiving has been very tempting for years now - so I'm reading this with interest.
That being said, there's only so much time and I really don't like doing something that I can't spare the time to get pretty good at doing - so I will just sit idly by and not be able to try it with only so many hours in the day.

the place here in NY will have up in the air in a half hour...i went once for my b-day and will go again. Tandem is the way to go for the first...i jumped at 12,000ft in jeans and a t shirt. Got bruised pretty bad on my shoulders but itwas worth it...Think it cost around 200 |

Skyguy-I just realized that I was thinking of motorized paragliders in my earlier post. I guess the pilot wears an engine on a backpack. I confused myself. |

"Cypress" is the name of the most used tree in the cemetery, at least in Europe.
I wouldn't use it even though it was the only parachute available in a falling down airplane
(I had to say that, sorry to all skydiving lovers!)

I spent 6 years flying hang gliders, mostly going cross country and found it to be a very safe hobby if you stay within your limits. It's flying... pure and simple. |

That was funny. But the Cypres isn't the parachute. It's just a battery, an altimeter, a clock and a pair of scissors, as far as I know, wrapped up in a box smaller than a granola bar. If you are too low and still falling fast, it cuts a line that opens your reserve, which is usually packed to open FAST, and therefore gives you a wicked yank as it decelerates you.
After thinking about it more, I guess you might not want one if you are an experienced skydiver, because if you are planning on opening your main real low, you might get surprised when your reserve suddenly deploys on you. And if your main is open but you are doing hard spirals in the air or something, maybe that can somehow trick the Cypress into deploying, and two open parachutes are NOT better than one. But if you are just planning on going skydiving just once, or you just want to fall straight, open early and not get all fancy on the way to the ground, they seem like a great idea.
Skydivers sometimes wear helmets too, to cut down on wind noise, but especially if there are other skydivers in the air, so you don't slam into each other and knock each other unconscious. Who would have thought that would be a problem?

Having jumped out of military aircraft, fixed and rotary wing, I can tell you that most of them are NOT "perfectly good"! I miss jumping. It's a blast that is addicting. Sometimes I don't know what was funner- jumping or being the Jumpmaster and watching the fear on the kids faces sometimes. Fear is awesome. Have fun! |
