Mine does the same thing, I have about 8000 miles on it. From what I understand, it is supposed to sound like you have a roll of nickles rattling around in there, and if it ever stops, start worrying. The concensus on the rattling seems to be to buy a louder exhaust, that way you won't hear it as much. |

Syn3 is a bit thinner, and will reveal more valvetrain noise, but for the most part, all XB motors sound like a "Maytag full of marbles" once they have some miles on them due to aggressive cam profiles. The synthetic oil does allow more noise to creep through, though. The gear noise from the tranny with Syn3 is louder too, but shifting is smoother & easier. Unless you have any performance problems, I wouldn't worry. |

Plus the hydrolic lifters will make noise when the engines cold. That's normal. |

Yeah, what Odinbueller said. Like Ratyson said, It's when the engine stops making noise that you need to start worrying Plus after about 5K miles the engine really starts to loosen up & wear in good. (Message edited by Metalstorm on January 22, 2006) |

For years I had a bunch of clacking I thought was valve noise, but when I replaced my exhaust gaskets recently, it all went away. A leak here will sound just like a metallic click. |

Could it be a loose primary chain? |

The noise also depends on when it happens and where you notice it is emanating from. Johnny has a good point, a loose primary chain will make that kind of noise at idle or deceleration, that slowly decreases or disappears after warm-up. An exhaust leak could do it too. Make sure flange nuts are snug. If the bike sits for a long while, the lifters could bleed down and cause valve train noise. A dose of liberal goosing to get oil flowing should take care of that. But it could just be normal engine noise. As long as the bike is properly maintained, you should be no problem. |

I replaced my fluids with mobile1 full syn and adjusted my primary per the service manual for my 1000mi service and could'nt believe the difference it made in sound and shifting. It still sounds like some marbles are rolling around in there when at idle, but it does'nt sound like a diesel anymore. |

I seem to be having the same problem with the noise. I also have an Xb9sx w/ 3500 miles on it. Mine seems to be emanating from the base. The noise seems to get louder when the bike warms up. The chatter also picks up when giving it gas. |

I doubt it's a "problem" as such. I would however check the primary chain just to be sure. DO NOT tighten the primary chain to tight! There are cold and warm settings in the manual... Use them. Aside from that... Let it rock and roll. Worry when the noise stops. 20K on my 12R and it makes plenty of racket (we'll, it did before I put the force pipe on it... It may not even be running now for all I know, the Force pipe is way too effing loud ). |
