My clock on my dash resets everytime I start my bike. Also, when i first hit the start button sometimes I hear a "clunk", then nothing, then the bike will start and the clock will go back to 1:00. I have had my voltage regulator replaced, (under warranty), but I think my battery may be weak. Any thoughts? |

Mine does same - I figure battery is just not strong enough and I should put it on a tender or get a new one. Getting over TDC is the issue I imagine - |

I priced a new battery,65.00, from the dealer. Anyone have thoughts about an after-market battery? |

Same thing here. I believe it is the battery. However, you might just want to check your battery connections first (they could be loose). I found mine were loose, and it helped to tighten them. |

Yes, check the battery and ground connections making sure they are clean and tight. I would also check the starter switch contacts. I had some corrosion on mine last summer and it caused similar condition. |

my white 03 has been doing a similar thing as long as i have had it. charge it and not much changes. never gets much better or worse. i just gave up and quit setting the clock, lol. it always starts. i just blip the starter quick the first time and then it cranks right up the second time i hit it. so i figured i just wouldnt mess with it, but thats just me. my other 03 does just fine so far and hasn't done it once. |

Yoda, your 2003 XB is DUE for a new battery. now. for 65 bucks, the OEM battery is well worth buying. |

The bike has 11000 miles on it so maybe it is time for a new battery. Going to Daytona in March and I don't want issues while I'm there. |

You should only expect a couple years out of the battery. $65 every couple years is nothing to whine about after dropping $10k on a bike...

Your battery should last you 2 years. Now, the 2 years is not from the time you buy the bike. Check on when you bike was assembled (should be on the right side up near where the vin number is. That date is when your battery was put in. |

Dumb question - can a battery be checked / tested for fitness? Short answer I'm sure is yes, but is it a test that is good enough to tell you if you can expect another season from it? |

The H-D AGM battery, if used with a battery tender, should provide well over 2 years of service. My 2002 is still on the original battery, thanks to the tender. Same battery completely discharged while sitting a couple of winters ago, hooked up the heavy duty H-D charger/tender (5 & 2.5 amp charging rates), and it came right back up, held charge & load tested perfect. Really can't go wrong with the factory battery. |

Batteries can be load tested with a Ferret or Midtronics has a battery testing system that H-D dealers should have by now. The load tester actually places a load on the battery, while the Midtronics tester measures the resistance between the plates to analyze battery health. |

look in yellow pages under "auto electric" you will find a local shop,like mine, where you can take your battery for a load test. we dont generally charge for this service, just be polite, dont show up 4 minutes before quitting time on friday. |

Not the battery in my case. It did the EXACT thing you are describing. My starter would click like a machine gun on occasion. Went on for about a month until it would't even turn over. After several hours of diagnostics at the dealership it turned out to be a bare wire at the ECM. You couldn't see it unless you took it out. It was sparatic until it finally rubbed through. In case it hasn't been said already- ALL batteries are less effective in the cold. This may not cause much issue in your car, (you may notice slow cranking) but on a bike with a relatively small battery you may see a few issues pop up if the bike has been sitting for a while. If I let my XB sit for more than 2 weeks in the cold it'll crank slow and reset the clock, but it cranks fine if I'm riding on a regular basis. How often are you riding the bike now? Is it stored outside? If the battery connections are clean and tight and the bike is being ridden on a regular basis then you shouldn't have any issues. If you're riding it often and still having battery troubles then it's probably time for a new battery. Also, if the bike is allowed to sit for more than a week or two at a time you should probably invest in a battery tender to prevent premature wear on the next battery. Hope this helps. |

Yeah, this happens to me too. I noticed that if I tighten the screws on the battery it stops, but after a few months the problem arises again. I figured it was the vibration loosening the battery screws over time. What's bad is that the engine cuts out sometimes and takes a few minutes to start again. It was a big pain when the bike died at at red light. I thought it might be time for a new battery too. I ride an 03 firebolt. |

Oh, also trip meter resets itself when the clock cuts out. That's also really annoying. |
