I've read on this board about some who have had their clutch cable break while on the road and they manage to ride all the way home in (I think I remember reading?) 5th gear. So for instance say I'm riding along in gear and realize my cable has broken. How do you come safely to a stop and how would one get home? This hasn't happened to me yet. Just want to be prepared and know my options and risks.. |

There is some play in the primary drive chain... You can used this play to shift gears without the clutch. Racers (and ricers) shift without clutches all the time, it's just not recomended for longevity of Buell tranny's. You can hit neutral from second on the run without using the clutch. Trick is to find the throttle setting that will set the crank speed and transmision shaft so there is no load on the chain, then gently press the shifter down. It should quietly slip into neutral. To get rolling again, have a couple of mates push you while the bike is idling, once you have a little speed, click 1st, then change clutchless to get you home. I managed to get a ricer to the bike shop by using neutral at traffic lights, then paddling with my feet to get speed up before snicking the bike into first. Was a 40 minute trip and i reckon there were some puzzled cage drivers around me. To help prevent clutch cable failure, ensure you keep it lubed, particularly the swage at the clutch lever. |

Most of the cables failing was caused by having to much free play in them thus having a rubbing situation happen. Just keep your cable adjusted to the right free play and oiled and you will be ok. |
