Just out of curiosity, but why are they doing this to Buells? Why not take a sportster or the like and do this. |

My guess would be that the drivetrain is around the same price or its cheaper for a wrecked buell because it doesn't have the HD badge. And our motors are sportster motor that have been tweeked, so they builder doesn't really have to mod it. Just my guess. it is a shame that so many builders are chopping up perfectly good cycles though. Savages |

I like the first one. Using XB wheels pay homage to the heart of the beast. Sure would be fun to have as a second bike. Cataract2...my guess is 92hp stock vs 50+/- for a stock 883 or 70+/- for a stock 1200. Gearhead...doesn't sound like the first one was chopped up...just a transplant from a crashed XB. |

...components most desirable for 'pseudo/neuvo' custom bike builders are the wheels, brakes and motors. If you wreck your Buell, build your own chopper...all you need is a frame (probably at least 20 styles to choose from) and some matching body pieces to bolt on. Buying a pre-fab'd 'chopper' frame and bolting together/assembling from component pieces is much cheaper than rebuilding the Buell. People who build the type of bikes we're talking about could care less about whether or not the bike will get around a corner or not. ...it's about 'building' a bike, 'creating' and 'expressing'. I had to chuckle when I read the advertising for the ebay bike..."It's fast..." ya, so what. Not nearly as fast as the bike the motor came from, not as consistently fast, not as reliably fast and not as safe to be fast on---as the one that came from the factory. Buell motorcycles are works of engineering excellence; intentionally designed and professionally manufactured under stringent controls to provide an expected, reliable level of performance and operational safety. ...I don't get that feeling from 'choppers' |

I have a hard time seeing an instance where I'd wreck my Buell hard enough to make it cheaper to chopper it than re-build it. Any fall hard enough to damage the frame would also damage wheels and suspension components as well. If an insurance company wanted to total the bike because of a frame dent and I wanted to have a clear title would be the only reason I could see for making a bobber out of it. I don't know how much these bobbers sell for, but if it is more than a stock Buell I guess that could be a motivation, If it offsets the cost of frame, tins and exhaust, and in some cases, carb. |

The cool thing about the Buell Choppers is that people think you got 30, 40 even 50 grand wrapped up into such a unique chopper. But in reality, you can build one of these for 10-20 thousand. (Depending on how much of the work you do yourself.) My buddy Matt (a fellow badwebber aka "Fester") made one. Its one of the coolest choppers I have ever seen!
