trying to revitalise an archived post 'broken belt' http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/165739.html?1136281835

Daves,

How much can you do the belt for '03 XB9S and whats the usuall time frame for shipping to Oz.

Do you think i am going to have any luck getting buell to replace it or send me a cheque.

Its a shame it broke, i dont flog the bike at all, and then all you read and see advertised is how well buells stunt, and do wheelies, Buell itself does burnouts (smiley face) for advertising. I hope they come to the party but dont know where to start.

I bought the belt through an importer in Australia, he's a good guy and i do not hold him responsible. He is not a buell dealer so i cant just take it back to the dealer slamming the counter. Then again whats the difference, its a faulty part i shall persue him further before i leap too far.

Just want to cover my bases first, thanks guys for your help and info.

Leon, hopefully you'll hear from Daves shortly, but a question occurred to me. Are you sure you received the updated 2003 belt? I don't have the part numbers handy, but the original 2003 belts were known to be fairly fragile. Buell came out with an updated version around 2004 (NOT the new Goodyear 2004-up belt) which was much improved. I'm just wondering if somehow you got a left-over original type belt. I'm sure someone here can give you the part numbers for the original and updated belts so you could check.

I'm not so sure they were giving away the upgrade. If they were I missed mine!!

yes i got the supposed update, see original thread for the part numbers. good thought though Whodom.

Bake, they werent giving them away, yet they should as a recall if they really wanted to do the right thing by the customer since they basically agree the original belts are weak. No, you have to buy them.

Another thought, did anyone handle it aside from the installer prior to installation?
People seem to love doing the very things that cause failures in these belts .....twisting....folding....and in the end mutilating them through mishandling.

One of the deciding factors in buying the bike I did was the fact that it had already been converted to chain drive. Might be worth considering if you are having this kind of trouble with the belts.

no i dont believe any one handles it. I dont think i would go to chain but if i keep breaking belts i might consider it.

Cant imagine the probs that extra HP, say a turbo may cause for the belt.

Interesting enough though, chains still fail or break, but usually causing major damage. That happended to me on my trial bike. Just read an article of a guy who's split link failed and in doing so cracked his casing, and was stranded with oil and coolant on the road. It wasnt a buell though of coarse.

Nothing is the ultimate i guess.

Always use rivet master links, not the clip ones. too many failures with the clip type. With proper maintenance a chain should not suddenly fail.

Well I just saw this thread.
The belt lists for 162.00
Your price is 145.80

Shipping to Australia would probably be about 30.00
I have them in stock
Sorry it took me so long to see your post.

Leon,
Sorry to hear about your belt, I know you ride fast and smooth and don't do anything stressfull on the drive train, go with Daves, a new belt for just under AUD$250 is cheap. I've bought from him before he's good. And next time you go Lions Rd can you ring me up first? : )

Guys, you've all looked at my pics right?

Do you agree the belt looks faulty to have been broken like that.

Apparently Buell will only cover it for 90days if a buell tech installed it. So i am not covered because i installed it myself.

Do you believe that.

I followed the manual, there was nothing more i could do.

What happens when you get new tyres fitted, are you then risking a tyre fitter to handle the belt and then hope it doesnt break after.

Thats one reason why when i change my tyres i take the wheels off at home, saftely, slowly and carefully and take the wheels to the shop, this way i know the belt has been looked after. That original belt by the way was removed by myself 3 times for tyre replacements and is actually still ok (apart from travelling 19000km, i only changed it for sense of well being)so obviously i dont do anything wrong to the belt.

In revising my thoughts, i originally said it had less then 2000km on it but now i am thinking it was closer to only 1000km. It was only on the bike for 2 months (54 days).

What do you guys think, should Buell replace it, or am i just going overboard. I personally think its poor.

Signed
Loosing faith

I can understand Buell's general position, but in your case.... with your seeming expertise, care and dedication to doing things by the book.

Have you tried to escalate it within Buell customer service? Politely not accepting "no" for and answer

Leon,
Maybe take both belts in to show the service manager Gary (do not deal with the man behind the front desk) and explain how you've removed and refitted the old belt 3 times and it still hasn't broken, and you are aware of how to handle belts, therefore why void the warranty?
