It was a brisk ride into work this morning. I made sure to check the thermometer before hopping on the 9r. At 8 degrees F the electric gear is nice but I could use more. Glad it's not more than a 30 min. ride in. The high for today 29 degrees F. We'll see more snow/sleet here in the north east part of Maryland thursday. Any one else still riding now? Good day! | ||

T9r, I found out my electric jacket liner doesn't heat. Good thing the electrics have a lifetime warranty, I just gotta get a RMA and send it to them. I have a 50 mile commute (one way) and won't be doing that until we get some rain to wash the salt (or whatever it is) off the roads. I still get out for short rides though, it just has to be above 32 degrees so I can hose off any stuff from the ride. NE Maryland? I'm just above Westminister in PA. Cheers | ||

Wow. I commute to Baltimore for work. Been thinking of moving closer, but the housing prices are crazy and I have to have a garage for the girls (XB12X and FLTRI)! Guess I'll save that $$$ that would go into a bigger mortgage for custom stuff for the bikes :-) Cheers | ||

WOW, that's too cold for me to be riding! We have a bit of ice on the roads from the Friday storm. Haven't seen any bikes out since then actually. | ||

Everyone here in lower Alabama thinks I'm nuts for riding at night when it's 34 degrees. I love it. I grew up in Lancaster, PA so I'm planning on making it through the winter on the bike. I set 20 degrees as my cutoff. After that I think there could be injury given the gear I have. | ||

So at that type of cold temp, does the XB idle any differently than when it is warmer? | ||

Just talked to my girlfriend, it's 18 below in Lake Palcid. I doubt anyone is out on a motorcycle up there, maybe crazies on snowmobiles? | ||

When temps drop below the 30's I don't think any of my bikes would even start up. I would for sure at least have to hook up the battery tender for a little while. 97 S1,99 X1,99 ST4 T9R, You might be as far northeast in Maryland as possible, but I'm as far east in Maryland as possible. SteveH | ||

We've had snow the past few weeks in eastern Iowa, getting pretty sick of it. I was riding into the 20s, but now there's way too much junk on the road. I do wear the 'Stich in some days when it's really snowing, and throw a helmet on my desk just to keep people wondering, even though the truck is in the parking lot... | ||

i believe it was in the mid teens when i left for work this morning. i just put an extra fleece under my jacket and a pair of ski pants on. the only thing that gets too cold is my clutch hand from working that cold lever in crappy NOVA traffic. Luckily, work isn't that far away. once it gets below about 30, it all feels the same to me. all my coworkers think im nuts. i'm from WI though; as long as there isn't any ice, im riding. | ||

So no idling difference when it is cold vs. warm? My XB, even at ~40deg F, idles slightly worse comparing to the rock solid 1000 rpm idle when it is warm out. After the ride (bike warmed up), the idle is rock solid. | ||

After a brief drop into the 20s with snow last week, we are back into the 40s. I am riding, but being very carefull because there is sand at almost every intersection. My cut-off for riding was 34, but until I change the oil over to 10-40, I changed that to 40. | ||

Leaving work last night I thought the bike wasn't gonna start up. It turned over rather slow. Time to get a new battery and switch to 10w40. It was down to 3 degrees F this morning, I took the truck. | ||

I rode this morning to work - 7 degrees F. The grip heaters from American Sport Bike work very well, and my homemade electric-heated jacket ($20 materials) kept me pretty warm. Only thing I noticed was the rear wheel spins pretty easy if I give it a little throttle. Cold tires, cold road, etc. Idle is noticeably different. When first starting, it will die without a little throttle. Then it will barely idle below 1000. Once it warms up, the idle is too high. Another odd thing I noticed while idling is that the exhaust coming from the right side outlet is very visible (like when you breath on a cold morning) but from the left side outlet it isn't at all. I put my hand down there to verify exhaust is indeed coming out. This is the Buell race can - why is the right side different than the left? Is it just a matter of airflow patterns inside? | ||

Perry, is that -7deg or 7deg? Thanks for the info re: idle. So after you've ridden, the idle is normal at ~1000rpm? Wondering what the difference is on the XB vs. say, my F4i. The F4i idles the same doesn't matter what the temp is outside. The temp affects the XB's idle a lot more. | ||

I think you guys are crazy to ride at those kinds of temps. Around here, anyway, the roads are all covered with snow, ice, gravel, sand, and salt... |
