Hi, I came across a leaking primary oil cover on my bike. I was washing it today, and noticed after I got to work that the cover was leaking some oil. It is a small amount of oil that must have worked its way through the seal. I torqued the three screws down in a star pattern, any suggestions as to how to get a good seal on it? I was thinking pull it off and rub some tranny oil over the sealing edge kind of like how you would do to a brand new oil filter. Please give me some suggestions. | ||

If you mean your clutch inspection cover... Make sure you have a service manual!! If the bike is upright, not on its sidestand you can pull off the cover and check the gasket, I say have a manual because the clutch adjuster spring and seat are behind the cover and will fall out. I always make sure everything is good and dry and have a new gasket handy and put it back together, never had a leak. | ||

yea if its the inspection cover, the manual says to replace the gasket each time its off. I managed to use the same one again, but yours may be shot. | ||

You can pull double duty on the gaskets (replace them every other time) by flipping it over [the gasket] when replacing the cover. Take your cover off and flip the gasket. This may buy you some time. | ||

The clutch inspection cover gasket will not flip, it only fits one way. The Primary Chain inspection cover will flip. | ||

Both my inspection cover gaskets leak a bit. Rather annoying, this bit about using single-use gaskets on inspection covers...but I think the real problem is the gasket seat surfaces are coated in the same black crinkle-finish coating as the rest of the primary cover. I just say, "Hey, it's made by Harley, it's tradition," and leave it at that. | ||

Got my bike back. The 5K service only costed me $78 I did the oils myself otherwise it would have been more. Man I forgot how many Horsies my bike has. They must have resest the TPS, bike runs great except for one small problem. The rinigng sound still exists. I decided to just go on with my life and not worry because I am riding the •••• outta the 12R and it still has another year an nine months of warranty left.  | ||

My replacement gasket came with the cover. Parts guy said it only comes that way now. | ||

Yes, the ringing sounds is coming from the transmission area. earlier in the thread after tons of great posts (Thanks guys!  I decided that my primary chain must be too tight. Well the ringing sound only occurs when the bike is moving and the sound is optimal at around 3,000 RPM in 2nd and 3rd gear. Sound goes away after 3,000 RPM in 4th gear or higher. In neutral if I goose the throttle the sound can be heard but you really have to have a trained ear to hear it in neutral because at this point it is faint. I have not checked my primary since I got it back from the dealer, I am curious t see if it looks to have the same tension. Ill get back to you on that.} | ||

To sum up the sound I am hearing it sounds like someone decorated my tranny with some jingle bells that rapidly chime as the RPM increase |
